Afraid

Afraid

What makes me afraid? I am afraid of many things- some based on factual and tangible things, while others seem to be based on the internal self-talk, the negative image of myself, catastrophizing, or how other ’s may perceive me. The fear of the real and tangible is the norm (it’s rational). Being afraid of tornadoes, hurricanes, imminent danger, and illnesses is commonplace. The fear of my own thinking and perceptions, I know is a natural human behavior, but I can’t rationally explain it away- my mind, or I should say, my negative thinking gets in the way. It haunts me, taunts me, causes me to become indecisive and unable to change. I know that fear is our mind and body’s ancient, hardwired response to every perceived threat, no matter how subtle.

I am afraid of being failure. I fear not being a good father. I am terrified I am not good enough. I fear of being a terrible lover. I am deathly afraid of heights. I want to have sex with another man, but I am petrified of doing this. I know I can use mindfulness, gratefulness, positive thinking and affirmations to change how I perceive myself, change my thinking, thus it can change how I feel. And for the most part these coping mechanisms and tools do help for the most part, but my deep ingrained fears, I found I need help from another person to hold my hand and encourage me to help me overcome my timid and panicky thoughts. I have noticed the more I talk about my fears with people I trust or the more I have internal conversations with myself, it helps me overcome them. What are you afraid of? How do you confront your fears? Do you use a safety measure or a person to help you confront your fears?

An excellent topic this VF! Cos I am sure we all are "afraid" - have fears, and as you say, even those fears that many would reckon should not be an issue. Yep, the more sensitive a person is, thus perhaps even though those fears may seem to be irrational, they are not, as so many things in life join up, and the sensitive person may perceive or sense something that is not obvious? Agree though, we have to face em, and even beat em at times or or they could limit our lives. Having "people you can trust", in life or as a lover - can def not go wrong there!

My biggest fear is getting dementia/Alzheimers in later life. I've watched my Grand-mother, my Uncle and my own Mother go from living happy-go-lucky lives only to be struck down by this cruel disease.
