Why Spokane sucks so much part IX

With a title like Why Spokane sucks so much part IX one might be lead to believe that I am a bitter disgruntled old fart like something out of a Clint Eastwood movie. In reality I have a very bright and optimistic view of the possibilities that the future holds for my city and nation, its just that my vision and reality have this dichotomy going on. I haven't been writing because I have a lot of things going on in my personal life and just need to take a break, but what I have been reading in the newspaper the last couple of days is forcing me to speak out.
A few years back there was an incident in a convenience store and the police confronted a mentally unstable man with false accusations. Because the man was holding a plastic bottle in his hand they used that as an excuse to light him up with 50,000 volts. The man was named Otto Zehm and by all accounts he was a pretty nice guy whose hobby was playing in a band with friends. During the course of their confrontation Otto became abusive and started to curse and swear, being lit up with 50,000 volts might have had something to do with it, along with his mental difficulties. The police should be used to this by now as the town has a schizophrenic population well above the national average. Surrounding counties send them here cause this is where all the services are concentrated.
Anyhow, poor Otto gets himself tasered, billy clubbed, hog tied, hooded and he wasn't even the one they were looking for. The end result of all this is that Otto was asphyxiated and stopped breathing. Yeah, yeah, police brutality happens all the time no big deal, even I am used to it by now. What has me upset is that the city investigation released earlier this week stated that the officers acted within their mandate and no charges would be forthcoming, sounds like business as usual to me.
I was all prepared to write old Otto off when all of a sudden a miracle occurred, a Federal Grand Jury indicted one of the cops for violating Otto's civil rights with excessive force, you think? Now here is the part that has me all upset, the city and their investigation subverted the truth and made themselves and vicariously you and I accessories to the crime of murder. This is all of course contingent upon getting a conviction and I'm giving two to one odds that they will. I don't like being lied to, and I definitely don't like throwing good money after bad. The city has already retained an attorney to the tune of over $200,000.00. All the money they are wasting defending this case could just go straight to settling this claim for damages by the next of kin if it were not for one problem, no one can admit they were wrong. The inability to admit being wrong is an infection that has infested state, local and national government for the last decade.
When they finally get a conviction on Officer Karl Thompson for violating Otto's rights, the puke shit who said he was innocent should get his ass fired too. Once again I don't like being lied to, especially by elected types or their staff. When I find out who lead that investigation I will be sure to run it up a flag pole for everyone to salute.
One last note for those of you who might think that the police were justified in using a taser on him. When the show Cops was filmed in Spokane recently they showed a routine traffic stop. and the driver was told to place his hands on the hood. The police noticed that he had something clutched in his hand and ordered him to open it. You wanna take a guess at what happened next? Within 3 seconds they had him lit up with high voltage, and it turns out there wasn't anything all that important in his hand anyhow. Imagine what they would have done to him if he had a plastic pop bottle in his hand. The police in this town are a bunch of out of control cosmic kill joys that behave in a manner unbecoming a professional force, and that is just one more reason why Spokane sucks so much.
I really didn't want to start blogging again but this one was just begging for it.
