Team work

At the time that it happened everyone had nothing but praise for US Airways Flight 1549's pilot Sully Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles, but there is something you may not know about all of these people. The pilot, first officer, the flight attendants, the ferry operators, and fire and rescue all had something in common. Would you care to guess what all the people involved in the Hudson River rescue had in common? They were all unionized workers, and they were out there demonstrating their experience and professionalism there on January, 15th, 2009.
Many of the people that were responsible for the miracle on the Hudson have been duly recognized with the appropriate awards, medals, and citations, so I don't need to overly laud them. What I find more significant is who was not there, that would be the Coast Guard, the Police, Homeland Security, the T.S.A., or anyone else connected with the government. This was 100% a civilian operation, with the exception of F.D.N.Y. (union) and there is nothing in the government regulations that would have prevented this accident. Quite the opposite the T.S.A. has been reduced to a non-union operation once it fell under the jurisdiction of homeland security and their tyrannical ways. I can only hope that President Obama returns the T.S.A. to civil service control so that they can return to being the high quality union operation they once were.
This blog was only supposed to mention Captain Sully and his heroics in passing, but I got kinda carried away. What I wanted to do was go back over some territory that I covered in a blog post titled Kong Lomerate. In Konglomerate I outlined how meddling by the administration, Bush Administration that is, has interfered with the competitive bidding process to favor Northrop Integrated Systems (their aerospace division is non union) over the unionized Boeing workforce. It wouldn't be worth bringing it up again if it wasn't for the fact that Northrop's airframe subcontractor Airbus has been having planes fall out of the sky left and right.
The Air Force's new tankers will be manned by our nations finest and it is unthinkable that they should fall victim to political machinations that favor a non-union manufacturer over a unionized one, especially when the union product is actually superior. Boeing has built thousands of air refueling tankers and EADS who has no experience building so much as one. The reason this issue is so close to me is that I have friends who work making sub-assemblies for Boeing and they talk about their work with the same kind of dedication I hear from artists, they really take great pride in their workmanship and to have the rug pulled out from them by treasonous double dealing is well just treasonous. Fortunately the G.A.O. has discovered the favoritism pulled the plug on the contract and put it up for rebid.
You may have noticed that my characterization of our military personnel vacillates between our nations finest and baby killers, it's a hang over from the Vietnam War. For today they are our nations finest, but that could change with my moods which are about as stable as a bi-polar on amphetamines, but at least I am stable about my dislike of lying and cheating. My question to you, (and I have learned that just like Jeopardy it has to come in the form of a question) is, would you rather have yours serve our country in, a union built plane, or non-union?
Incidentally that plane sitting in the river is an Airbus, figures.
