Fuck the World

Every once in a while there is something that I see that really grabs me and brings out memories of my past. There is a new show that I caught on late night television that really hits a nerve, the show is called, Sons of Anarchy. The Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club has characters and plots that although a little to rich for me, are not so over the top as to be unbelievable. The characters stuck me as just like people I once knew, ok well similar to people I knew. The matriarch of the clan, “Gemma Teller Morrow” played by Katey Sagal of Married with fame comes across as a real skank, but I am saying it in a good kind of way. Ron Perlman plays “Clarence ‘Clay’ Morrow her husband and leader of the gang. Before I knew Ron’s name I always called him Neal Anderthal for his brutish troglodyte like appearance, normally such appearance would have doomed him to be a character actor but are perfect for this character.
I have only seen two episodes but it appears the gang’s big money making gig is gun running, and I can certainly relate. Normally there would be drugs as well, but they are already so far over the line I figure the writers didn’t want to push their luck. There are run ins with the pigs, there are run ins with other gangs, there are snitches and bitches, along with everything else you would expect a motorcycle gang to be involved with. The show doesn’t come across as cookie cutter although they are taking a lot of Hells Angel’s history and blending it in with the story of their club.
Hollywood went through this phase where all the heroes were disaffected Vietnam veterans and this is no exception, but this time it is done right. The relationship between, "Piermont 'Piney' Winston" played by William Lucking and Clay is like brothers in arms who have been in the shit together. I am to young to know what that was like but all the older in my neighborhood went and served, I was always kind of envious of how tight they were. For more on some of their fates and some of our fun together you can read Secret Agent Man, and Johnny and The Wall. Anyhow these actors have things about their character that remind me of Jack and Davey, I guess that ability to connect with people is what makes a great show. I’m actually kind of surprised that the show even makes television at all since they go around dropping the hammer on anyone, and anything, that gets in their way. Disposable characters are like girls with bad attitudes and great asses, you just love to see them go.
Some of the stuff in the show is kind of implausible like the way, "Jean Carlos 'Juice' Ortiz" played by Theo Rossi is able to tap into secured law enforcement networks. Another one that doesn’t happen in real life is the way all these hot looking girls are just dying drop their current boyfriend to hop on the back of their scooter for a ride back to the club. Then again maybe the rigid suspension on their bikes is doing something for them that I didn’t account for. If stuff like that really happened I would go dig my leather jacket out of mothballs, and start saving my pennies for a hog. Even with the over the top theatrics the show is an instant favorite of mine and I will have to end the party early this weekend to be home and watch at midnight, courtesy of the FX channel.
