Tell me about kik?

I've had several women mention they use kik. What do you know and think? Is it safe to have on my phone? Can I mute incoming messages, presuming I would get any? Does it allow discretion should someone else pick up my phone?

 I have kik on my kindle fire tablet and I like it for discreet communication. I only activate the app when I want to chat with someone.
