I saw a thread on Reddit discussing Kik shutting down. If found several reports on some legit news sites saying the same.

 It is not fake news. They are also into crypto currency and are going to concentate on that 100 percent. No shut down date has been announced yet.

 You can also use Telegram, it allows you to hide your phone, and use a username. Seems to be working very well.
