Two Times Stronger?

(Don't read this if you care about real mathematics.)

What's the difference between two times stronger, and twice as strong?

?

There is an advert which recommends a new deodorant because it is "two times stronger."

I suppose the ad men thought saying "two times stronger" would be more effective than saying "twice as strong."

But hang onaminute.............Maybe in that context two times stronger is different?

After all, if two times stronger was only the same as twice, then what would "one time stronger" be?

A-haaaaa? Not so easy is it.

Your thoughts?

i think it's all in the effort that it takes to say "two times stronger" vs "twice as strong". it's much harder to say "two times stronger" because it has more syllables. it also uses different muscles of your tongue... muscles that require more skill to use, so if you don't use them right, you'll have a sprained tongue. there'fore it is far more impressive to be able to say "Two times stronger" than it is to say "Twice as strong".

Twice as strong is for teenagers. Two times stronger is for real men.

what do you think? did i figure it out! i love math word problems!!!

Ha ha, I like the way your mind is working. Two times is for real men. And don't sprain your tongue.

But I can't tell you if you figured it out - there is no answer that I know of!

And somehow the words "muscles of your tongue" and "more skill to use" got my mind onto a different subject!

Violette probably has nailed it. Two times stronger just sounds different to normal English so it stands out on the advert.
For the mathematics, let us use S to represent strength.

    The original strength was S=1
The new strength is likely to be S=1.5 because 1.5 rounds up to 2. No sane company would unnecessarily over strengthen a product assuming the manufacturing costs are proportional to strength!
Sneaky thinking Peter!

Nice to see you Girl. Totally reasonable comment, but too boring. Try again.

clearly two times stronger is stronger than twice as strong,...or long for that matter,....if something were 2 inches long,...twice as long would be 4 inches,....but two times as long would be 6 inches by my cal-cul-um-a-cations

I'm with Tigger. If something were quantified as 100, then twice as strong is 2x100 or 200. But two times stronger would equal 100 + 2(100) or 300.

Elevate me...

Ahhhhh, interesting.........But also, when did length come into the question by the way? What were you thinking about!!!

I really like this kind of reasoning. (And I applaud your ability to place quirky back street logic in a correctly notated mathematical formula by the way. )

But surely wouldn't this be stated as "Our product is another two times stronger"?

hmmm another two times as strong doesn't exactly rolllll off the toungue now does it,....I honestly wasn't thinking anything in particular in terms of twice as long two times a long,....in the pervy sense,...I just lacked hippichicks mathmatical notation skills and sense

besides if I were thinking naughty thoughts I'd be tending more in the direction of girth over length

Ah yes, I have noticed girth is sometimes mentioned.....although perhaps in that case, two times longer, or two times thicker might be one time too much!

lol you could be correct, however twice as thick is a relative measure so it really would depend upon the starting point

For some reason the words "starting point" sent my mind wandering away from what you meant, but leaving that to one side, yes, of course, two times thicker than far too thin would be just about right wouldn't it!
