Do you or did you ever engage in BDSM, think about it, ask about it, check it out?
I've written a lot about invidual aspects of BDSM on this blog. This is the start of a series on specific topics.

What is BDSM?

The acronym itself is a combined acronym for
B&D - Bondage & Discipline
D&S - Domination & Submission
S&M - Sadism and Masochism, sometimes called sadomasochism

BDSM is a mutual interest activity-relationship within a culture and community that engages in a number of physiological, mental or emotional, and spiritual stimuli. The center of BDSM is D&S, domination and submission. It is the core and foundation of the mutual interest emotional and spiritual relationship. Supporting the D&S foundation is B&D, bondage and discipline, and S&M, sadism and masochism with emotional, both with mentally and physically and emotionally stimulating activities.

Controversially, BDSM is a way to focus ones natural instincts through activities in a relationship which enhance and balance three planes of existence "body (physical, sensual), mind (temporal, emotional), and soul (infinite or spiritual)" existence. For everyone, there is a fire in the pit of their gut, in the center of their mind, in the expanse of their soul, which is often unfed. It withers or lies dormant. When that flame is given stimuli it expands and grows to flourish and feed from the very nature of one's being - body, mind, and soul, harmonize and become a self-sustaining engine, a state of nirvana, opening a glimpse of heaven. The saints often write of this as reaching a state of ecstasy, a state with the divine. It should be pointed out that most other physiologies and sciences, which claim "body, mind and soul" healing, simply concentrate on one of those, such as massage, yoga and natural health (physical, sensual), or meditation (temporal), while attempting to cross three or more planes (worlds) of existence through logical (temporal) understandings of creation or purpose (spiritual). Few people suddenly become interested in BDSM from teaching, training, recruitment or logic oriented influences. Teaching or training might show what they feel. Logic might help explain what they already know. Yet, people engage in or are drawn to BDSM from the fire within, their natural instinct.

I use the phrase activity-relationship because BDSM is deeper and more involved than the sum of its parts, which are often dissected by those who attempt to describe BDSM, where they focus on certain popular activities in BDSM. Culture and community are often mentioned when discussing BDSM, because like any interest, those who practice it, often seek others who do (it takes two to tango), and thus becoming a cultural subset or a BDSM community of our larger society. Further, people who enjoy specific interests within BDSM appear to be members of a smaller subset or subculture within the BDSM community.

BDSM includes a number of consensual activities that enhance an interaction between those who are in either dominant or submissive roles. This relationship like any friendship or partnership, engages the brain, body and soul in ways that enhance each person's sexual and non-sexual interactions.

What is not BDSM?
BDSM is not forced, it is not a form of abuse, it is not about pain, it is not degradation, and it is not destructive. Many web sites focus on these aspects as a way to either describe, relate or pigeon hole the complicated aspects of BDSM. All of those are bogus and can not be taken seriously. Many of the "fakes" or "posers" in BDSM are those who engage in destructive behaviours, and who, for reasons of error or outright fraud, perpetrate their behaviour upon novices in a community in which they think they can blend, that being BDSM.

What might/may or might not/may not be involved in BDSM?
BDSM does not have to include sex of any definition of the word sex, or it very well can. BDSM is or may not include pain; it is not tied only to pain. BDSM is most public or popularized in gay leather bars, but it is not just a gay community or a leather community. In fact, from my interviews of thousands of men and women involved in BDSM, most are by far, men who associate themselves with a straight or bisexual label. BDSM might involve what's called a 'Master' and a 'slave', or not. Although BDSM can be lived like a lifestyle, a person may or may not live their dominant or submissive personality fulltime or only in BDSM 'play'. A man or woman who is dominant in business, which can be a learned behaviour, might engage as a submissive in BDSM, their natural role, or vice versa role or behaviour. Role playing might be used or might not. Monogamy is not always a clear defined casting in BDSM play, sexual or non-sexual. Play can be only non-sexual. Straight, bisexual or gay, are not clear lines of distinction in BDSM. There is no set or defined situational awareness within or among the BDSM community, culture or subcultures.

What drives BDSM?
The driving engine of the physical, emotional and spiritual relationship is a combination of control, trust, bonding, and choice of ones body, thoughts and purpose of being. Dominant and submissive personality types or learned behaviours are essential to BDSM activities, roles and interactions. Does a dominant enjoy controlling another person or a submissive enjoy serving another person? Those are the words often stated or used in defining roles. However, a natural dominant seeks and is energized by a natural submissive's relinquishment of control in unconditional service to the dominant; while a natural submissive seeks and is energized by a natural dominant's power and ability to responsibly take control (ownership) of a natural submissive. A dominant's and a submissive's interaction relationship is co-dependant; one cannot flourish or fully exist without the other. They are each other's fuel that bonds them together. A natural submissive trusts his dominant without question - ultimately this is an unconditional trust and symbiotic. A natural dominant absorbs and assumes control unquestionably in a (responsible) trust bond (relationship) that, due to its very nature, can only support and enhance. A natural dominant cannot harm, diminish or destroy the fuel that energizes his existence. In this very nature based understanding, choice is a human trait that both dominant and submissive come to 'know' of each other. A dominant will take responsibility and control for the very life of the submissive, while the submissive gives his dominant meaning and life.

What is a Dominant or a Submissive Master or a Slave?
There are a thousand definitions that all skirt the basics. Foundationally, a person who engages in BDSM itself is usually naturally dominant or submissive, or a person who likes to play the role of a dominant or a submissive. B&D is the core. One is naturally so, or plays a role in all BDSM activity, community or stimuli. That is not the same as a fake or a poser. Role playing is common and fully acceptable. Over time, as a dominant gains experience, training from those who are more experienced, deep understanding and an ethos for his abilities, nature and 'craft', he is granted recognition as a Master. Slave takes on many connotations outside this realm. However, conversely to a Master, over time as a submissive gains experience and a deep understanding and ethos for his nature, abilities and 'craft', he is granted recognition as a Slave. Within much of the leather community within the broader BDSM community, an entire set of protocols come into play, for those who tend to live BDSM as a lifestyle.

What is a Fake or a Poser?
A fake, is one who is not described by the above. A fake is a person who seeks to destroy, harm, or degrade another person is not a natural dominant (else he's psychotic), or a natural submissive (else he's psychotic), but rather a twisted, hate filled, angry, revengeful individual who is psychotically lashing out on unwitting victims. The internet is full of such fakes. A poser tends to act like a dominant or a submissive for often undefined reasons which can range from desire, or envy, or misunderstood interests, or
confused personality, or need to belong, or voyeuristically observe others from behind a mask.

What are not some of the activities?
Without judgment of these activities, BDSM activities do not include , do not include death, do not include violence, do not include animals, and do not include victims (unwitting players). Pedophilia is not BDSM, Beatiality is not BDSM, and is not BDSM. Generally they're mentioned in the BDSM community, but as much as they are, they are their own area of activity.
