Mistakes Happen

If one dream should fall and break into a thousand pieces, never be afraid to pick one of those pieces up and begin again.

-Flavia Weedn, Flavia and the Dream Maker

It was one of those ordinary business lunches. Wayne Enterprises was in the process of acquiring another company and it brought the usual conglomeration of lawyers out of the woodwork. Tired of sitting in the boardroom I suggested lunch. Seafood sounded good.

We were waiting on our appetizers to show when I saw her walk in and sit down in a booth across the dining room. Suddenly my mind tuned out all thoughts of mergers and acquisitions. She was wearing a brown wrap-around top that tied at the side with a brown , blue and white printed skirt that showed off her athletic, shapely legs. She was wearing high-heeled sandals and looked every bit the goddess I remembered the last time we were together. Her eyes were still the piercing Sapphire blue. So blue they practically glowed. As she walked through the room I could see several heads turn her way. Selena Kyle commanded attention no matter where she was or what she was wearing whether it be an evening gown, or her spandex Catwoman outfit.

I hadn't spoke to Selena since the morning she called right after I stopped the Anal Joker and his sex toy escapade. My injuries caused me to leave town and spend time recuperating in the UK. I've been a fool to not have called her since my return but I have questions that I'm afraid to find the answer to. Somebody killed Frankie Foreskin and left claw marks all over the dead body. Everything pointed at it possibly being Catwoman. I know Selena is capable of violence but is she capable of killing someone?

I was so captivated by her, I failed to notice the gentleman she was with. She has such a power over me I forget everything I trained myself to do. I try to always be aware of my surroundings. I know where all the exits are in the room, where any threats may come from, what I would do in case of any emergency. But once I saw her, all that went out the window and I couldn't think of anything else.

Selena was in one of my favorite restaurants having lunch with another man. Is it a date? Is he a ? Why does the thought of her with another man make my skin crawl? We've never been anything more than casual. I've certainly been with other women but the thought of her seeing someone else was like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

My mind was no longer on business. The lawyers were rattling on about this or that but I wasn't listening. I wanted to know what she was ordering, what they were talking about, what she's been doing since I saw her last.
They ordered wine. I watched as she giggled at his jokes. From the angle I couldn't make out his face. I wonder if I know him? Why do I care? I care, that's why. I'm supposed to be dark and brooding and not allow myself to get close to anyone yet here I am, allowing a criminal in a catsuit to crawl her way into my heart. A beautiful criminal who made my stomach flutter and my heart pound, but she is a criminal none-the-less. A criminal who made love like an angel, but a criminal none-the-less.

When he reached out and took her hand, lacing his fingers into hers, my mind quickly went to work hatching a plan. I excused myself from my table of business associates and made my way into the restaurant bar. From there I called the restaurant's house phone and told them I had a very important call for Selena Kyle. I described what she was wearing and they assured me they would find her. The maitre'd found her and whispered in her ear. She showed a look of concern not knowing how someone would know she was here. She followed the maitre'd to the house phone.

"This is Selena Kyle." She said. Her voice still the sultry smooth I remembered.

"He should have ordered you the Beringers '82. It's quite excellent and goes well with the salmon you're having."

The look of surprise on her face was actually quite priceless. "Bruce?!" Her head spun like a top looking for me back in the dining area of the restaurant.

"I'm not in there, I'm in the bar." With that, her head turned toward me and her blue eyes bore a hole through me as if they were laser beams. She hung up the phone and came over.

"Are you following me, Bruce?"

"No, quite the opposite actually. I was having lunch with a school of lawyers and I saw you walk in. How are you Selena?"

"I'm fine. I'm with someone."

"I know. He has good taste in restaurants but poor taste in wine. But he has excellent taste in company." I looked her over, enjoying my dive into the crystal blue water of her eyes. "Is it business or pleasure?" I asked.

She hesitated momentarily before answering, "Both actually." Of course, she could have been referring to her art brokering business or maybe he was a mark for her criminal activities. But then, Bruce Wayne isn't supposed to know that Selina Kyle is Catwoman. Batman isn't supposed to know either, for that matter. Confused? Yeah, me too. "You may know him. Edward Smegma, the real estate financier."

I had heard the name before. He was another finance type, which put him on par with a banker to me. "Oh, real estate," I said, nodding my head, "Are you looking for a new place?" I pretended to play dumb but she could tell I was being condescending.

Her beautiful eyes narrowed to slits. "No, he finances real estate deals Bruce. He's not a real estate agent. I should be getting back to him."

I reached out my hand and touched her arm to stop her from turning away. "Selena, I'm sorry. This isn't how it was meant to be," I said referring to my departure and subsequently losing touch.

She stopped momentarily. "I know Bruce, but maybe it's for the best." She went back to her table and Edward.

I wanted to grab her in my arms and kiss her like she'd never been kissed before. I wanted to scream to her that I was sorry and I'm an ass. I wanted to show her how I feel but I couldn't. It was my mistake, and now I was going to pay for it...in more ways than one. I called the maitre'd over and told him to tell my table full of lawyer that I left. I paid the table bill and also gave him instructions to apply whatever Selena and Edward had on my tab as well. I tipped him handsomely and left the restaurant.

Some things aren't meant to be...or are they?
More to come, next time, same batchannel.
Pax!

Selena sounds like someone I know....hmmmm... I can't put my finger on it but I am sure she will be revealed later on.

She is actually an amalgam of several ladies. Some more than others, each beautiful in their own way.

Ahhhh...well, true...you might not have time with all of that on your plate.

It isn't like you are Superman.

I'll try to slip that task in to my schedule between making billions of dollars and saving the world.

So, are the other stories with Selena here in your blog? I might need to go ratting around in the bat-basement...

There are several. That tramp just won't leave me alone. Unfortunately, I haven't seperated those out into a fiction section so you will just have to go digging. I guess I should do that huh?
