The Wrong Impression

I think everyone gets the wrong impression of someone. Sometimes it is stamped in their minds. There is no way of changing their minds once they made it up. I know I have made wrong impressions of people then changed my mind myself. So look again before you make any rash decisions. Have you ever made a wrong impression of someone? How and why did you change your mind? Just Curious.

    Quoting GerK321Cum:
Roxy, the problem is in part associated with the way the human brain appears to work. Unlike accurate computer databases, the human brain works by association.

So the impression I would have of you is made up of links to lots of little bits and pieces already defined within my experience of human beings! Now on a simple scale of one to ten lets say everyone starts at 5 for everything, then you speak and and I like your accent. Well accent moves up the scale,.. Oh like your nice new hair do.. that moves up as well, then some action triggers an association with something bad.. ooops the scale on that point moves downwards.

Now these are just silly types examples, the human brain is much more complex, but the important thing to realize is the we form impressions by association. These associations get "re-inforced" or "decay" naturally through experience. This allows us modify our view of other people through a "quick" process!

However if the association remains strong between someone and an attribute, then a much slower process allows us to alter the attributes of the attribute. More complex here but a simple example... all men in leathers with very long hair are cool bikers (and all you associate with bikers). So you meet a long haired guy in leathers and make immediate associations. But this guy is not a biker or like any biker you know, completely different. Now there are 100 associations between bikers and behavour, and you have to start to mental process of re-assessing long haired leather clad men.. with is much more complex and a whole lot slower as it requires the brain to re-define attributes rather than re-associate existing attributes with an individual.

Also the human brain fills in gaps in it's own knowledge of individuals.. so for me you a complete person, but since I really know very little about you, you are made up from my experiences in my brain and impressions. These would change a lot were we to meet... obviously!

However, we have seen three ways that we build up and maintain impressions, and allow us change impressions of people we meet and know.

As an interesting aside, with age our ability to change is reduced as changing the associations is difficult and gets harder with age. Think that is why older people can seem grumpy sometimes as the brain just creates bland impressions. Am thinking of grumpy old people who, for example, cannot stand the noise of noisy teenagers playing - so they form a dislike of all groups teenagers immediately!

Now the next chapter on the human brain... sorry this post is so long and complex, but the mechanisms interest me. Now my brain is completely spent for the day...
Sounds like you have put some thought into your response.

And roxy, I am unable to think of anytime I have made any wrong impressions of someone in a negative way. However I think that I may have some problems remebering. WE all make decions based on the past and it will always effect you wether you know it or not.

Hi roxy, I can relate to this topic. Many people do not like me being a sexual human being.Since I have a mild disabillity, I often get labeled as nieve.
I often get discouraged by that. But the great thing about this site,
is that I can be open and honest about sexuallity and feel like an equil.

Hello, it is ok on the long post. I must got you really thinking there which I wanted out of this post? Yes I think everything works by association in the brain. That depends on what we are seeing and processing at the time. Yes sometimes we can change that impression too. Thanks for posting.

Well, I first try to take the person at face value. I know that it is very hard not to jump to a snap judgment in this day and age in our society. Even if you do do that at times, try and take a second look and give them a chance. That is what I would hope that they would do if it were me.
Good Luck!
