The Idea Pad

Recently acquired a idea pad or notebook what ever your prefer to call it. I tell you it is very handy especially being wireless and all. My desktop is not in service right now but hopefully I can put some use to it soon. This is my only communication presently. Sometimes the wireless disconnects then it is not so inconvinient. Do you prefer your laptop or desktop? Just Curious.

Good to know this sort of discussion "provokes healthy debate" as opposed to "clutters up the page."

I should really get more careful about my backup system.

Yes, web mail has been a good spot for storing things. And Google now allows users to store raw files in storage, without even bothering to attach them to e-mail messages.

The problem with any sort of storage, for me at least, is that I have tons of photo and video data. Naturally video is a hog, but I do a fair amount of photo editing and work-in-process photo editing files are huge space-hogs too.

One trick I found for edited photos is to put all my edits onto their own layer or layers, and then when I think I'm done with serious editing on an image I delete the original image layer, since I already have it in the original photo file. Then if I need to go back and do further edits to the file, I can load the edit layers up, then the original file as a separate layer, and continue with editing. But that is a bit of a hassle compared to just buying more storage.

The problem with online back-up services like Carbonite is that they have a fairly stiff fee, particularly if one uses a huge amount of space. When one doesn't have that much to back up, it's easy enough to back it up with things like dropping it all onto a CD or a USB chip. When there's a huge amount of data, the fees get nasty -- and the time it takes to upload all the data seems like it would be nasty too.

Maybe I'll just try to find a tool that dumps all my data by FTP to my web server. There the storage fee is a lot lower than on sites that are explicitly pitched as back-up sites. Maybe I can whip up a script that does that in some sort of incremental way, so I don't have to upload terabytes of crap every time I want to run a back-up.
my photoshop guy used to do the layers thing you are talking about when saving the pics, this way when we uploaded to the printer's ftp site, id did save some time and space.

we only kept the stock photos for back up, and rendered (was all for web use) video. we would dump stock video.

i was thinking, that the servers worked great in an office environment with lots of people, but when people started to work from home, it basically became useless. that's why we moved to the external hard drives. because you can file and forget.

if you invent the script. sell it! hahahahaha!

hahaha! i think we took over miss roxy's blog here!

i had that problem, i am more stringent with what i keep and where i put it now. i always have a mega-gig stick with me and clean it often to transfer.

as for back-up i have been through too many pc's. they are very unstable. so the external drives are great, but you do have to set aside a day for it, or use an employee who really digs that kind of stuff.
one thing that has proven invaluable through the years is a webmail account. i use yahoo. they give lots of space and whatever you mail there can stay there. then pull it off when you need it.

i have tried my own servers, but they are expensive and they fill up as well. especially if you are using lots of photos and video. i've never tried the carbonite stuff...

If I did a better job of segregating the files by the purpose of the computer that would work pretty well, but sometimes when I've run out of space or just had to use one machine instead of another for whatever reason things end up on the wrong machine.

I definitely need a better back-up system too.

that's true about the updating of files. but each machine is designated to a business or use. i have one desktop for the magazine stuff all my adobe licenses are on that. the other desktop is for personal kids use.

i have one laptop for my personal garbage, two others are for two other businesses i own, and one is strictly for my accounting. the laptops are awesome because i can pass them off to people and have them bring them back.
i keep an external for back up of everything.

Hello, wow that is a lot of equipment there and have lots of versatility and variety of uses. Enough to keep you busy for the rest of your life. That is what I said when I got my desktop got enough to keep me busy for about 20 years. Thanks for posting.

It's not quite as much versatility as I'd like. I had a home-office network set up when I lived near Seattle, and little by little it stopped working as well as it had.

Another problem with multiple machines is the matter of keeping track of which machine has the best version of a file I'm working on, or which one has a given file at all. I wish I had a good solution for that.

I have two usable desktops and two usable laptops. I use one desktop for general use when portability isn't an issue and big screen is useful. The other is stripped down in terms of software to optimize it for compute-heavy stuff like video editing. I use my little "netbook" laptop most of the time, and my full-sized laptop for taxes and a few other things.

I use a desktop in work but at home I prefer the laptop. It means the internet can follow me, upstairs, downstairs and into the garden....

I have a new teeshirt that I'm proud to wear!

Roxy, I use a laptop. I find that it is more convienent, and more flexible. I used to have a desktop, but recently changed. I am pretty much satisfied with the laptop.

I only have a desktop; but if it ever goes kaput, then I am going to get a laptop. Laptops have come a long way and most of them are just as good as my desktop plus they offer the versatility of being able to go places.

Well if it is included about the work job, then laptop is good, u can use it anywhere u r but so long there is a internet connection, but if just for fun, better off a desktop, so can concentrate about my workload at work....
