Out of chronological step with myself
Out of chronological step with myself I was going through my "album collection" this evening. It's mostly on vinyl actually. I realized something in doing it. My taste in music, for the most part, predates my birth. I would say that about 65% or so of everything I have that isn't classical dates from the 60's and 70's. Now, I was born in 1973, so frankly even though I'm a " of the 70's" I don't remember most of it. I especially don't remember the music, not first hand anyway. I have a bit of stuff from the 80's, even less from the 90's and almost nothing from this decade. What I have from the 90's and 00's (is that even right?) is for the most part work by groups like Pink Floyd and artists like Eric Clapton that are, or were still recording new material. This, as is my way, got me thinking about other things. In this case, more "chronological missteps" in my personality. - Being an engineer at heart and for the most part by profession, I prefer steam powered devices to almost anything else. - When playing with electronics, which I do for fun (yes I am a geek) instead of the ultra-miniature-supercomputer-driven whatnots of today that can fit into a thimble, I like vacuum tubes. Most people who know what a 12AX7 or 6BQ6 is can't believe I can even recognize what a tube is yet alone know it's use. Would this be the electronic equivalent of steam power? - I have and regularly USE a thimble. Machines can't sew buttons on worth a.... - I make a small environmental statement by using a 50 year old fountain pen. I've used the same pen for about 10 years now. Can you say that about you Bic? More "steam driven" technology? - I can cook on and bake in an Enterprise cook stove without using an oil burner. And yes, I can light it as well... So, I think perhaps I see a little more clearly why I feel out of step with my contemporaries sometimes... Really makes me scratch my head though concerning the real question: WHY? Can't dance and too fat to fly! |
