Morning Ritual - content warning

Morning Ritual - content warning

The beginning of everyday involves a number of rituals, and one of which I enjoy the most is the early morning shower. To feel the water flowing over my body stimulating the senses, tingling the nerve endings to a wakeful status and the massaging action of the stream caressing my shoulders and neck. Steam exciting the nasal passages, moistening the eyes, and enlivens the senses. Lathering the hair, the tingling of suds, foam sliding inexorably across chest, abdomen, soft as the tongue of a lover. Taut muscles yield to the warm caress of watery delight with a will more earnest than that derived from emotion, lust or yearning.

The smell of spring, wild flowers, and April freshness assails the mind from a nameless body lotion left behind so many years ago. It purges, restores, purifies, wiping away yesterdays sins cleansing for today’s trials. White stream of lather, carries my worries, and effaces fears, sliding over thick calves curling around toes before plunging into darkness.

Massaging, rubbing, scrubbing bare hand over broad chest, muscular shoulders, biceps, abdomen, hips, thighs, steam and suds cleansing rubbing ……. What? Black ….. alien object, upon leg, the size of a quarter, steam obscures, suds hover near eyes, squinting …… peering. Spider! Clinging to leg! Instinct takes over wiping it off in a flurry, stomping then a sigh. The twisted remains of the arachnid swirl down the drain from whence he came. I laugh, heart beat returns to normal.

A brush with death? No, but a surprise nonetheless, an interesting way to begin a day.
