Sixteenth Virtual Symposium "Friends With Benefits"

This blog entry is part of the sixteenth virtual symposium: Friends With Benefits

She keeps him near
Not for love
Or so she thinks

He gives her reason
To aspire
To conquer
To smile

How foolish she was
How arrogant to think
That she could play one
over on love

Hiding it under the guise
of 'benefits'
masking it simply as
'friendship'

Awesome. I am so stealing this.
The rules were clear and mutually agreed upon. Both with ambition, integrity and commitments to family and Career. No time or inclination for anything more than a NSA relationship, but FWB was a bonus.

"He keeps her near
Not for love
Or so he thinks

How foolish he was
How arrogant to think
That he could play one
over on love"

This time it is different. unlike the many meetings for coffee, lunch and quickies. He who thinks peach and orange are fruits not colors as she thinks they are, notices that she has perma grin pasted to her face. Her piercing green eyes, whose pupils were like light from my laser pointer, when i met her the first time, a look she perfected over the years from being used, abused and lied to are as wide as a saucer. Her face that was the color of cod fillet from not having seen sun for months is crimson red as if blood is going to burst out any second. OMG she is as much in love with you as you are with her, he thought. This was not how it was supposed to be. I am going to cancel all my plans today and stay with you said she. Sorry I can't today, will be tied up for the next 3 weeks, he lied to her the first time. She is 12 years younger, still has her dissertation to defend, career to pursue. He is not the person for her. She had no reason to doubt him. Reluctantly she got dressed and left. As he watched her get in her car and drive off. He felt exactly like the inuit who told a missionary, in the 1800's about his love.

“Fire runs through my body with the pain of loving you.
Pain runs through my body with the fires of my love for you.
Pain like a boil about to burst with my love for you.
Consumed by fire of my love for you.
I remember what you said to me,
I am thinking of your love for me.
I am torn by your love for me.
Pain and more pain.
Where are you going with my love?
I'm told you will go from here.
I'm told you will leave me here.
My body is numb with grief.
Remember what I said My Love
Goodbye My Love, goodbye.”

― Kwakiutl Indian

"Rules for happiness: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for.”― Immanuel Kant .

I loved what you did with it. Is poignant yet powerful. I think we can all relate to this feeling; the feeling of love and loss.

Myelin,
The pain is apparent, the imagery is solid.
My sympathies, if this happened to you, my friend.
Thank you for the lovely poetry and the contribution to the symposium,
Kitkat

The observant make the best lovers,
I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

Wow. Beautifully said. And for all the pain, the sentiment about her thinking she could play one over on love did bring a quick laugh to the surface.

One of my favorite expressions is "If you want to hear the gods laugh, start a sentence with 'I'll never...'"

Elegantly and lyrically done. Nice.

That resonates. We crave Utopia but our human selves could never be satisfied with it...I ponder. A disconnect of what the mind wants and the heart feels.
