An Adventure Awaits

My travels are taking me to the east coast in a few days. I might have planned an adventure with a blogger while I am there. (Shhhh! It's a secret!)

My trip coincides with a week-long vacation to visit family in Massachusetts although I will be spending time in New York.

My biggest dilemma: trying to fit a week's worth of clothes in a carry-on bag! Yes, I am too cheap to pay the baggage fees!

For those that frequently travel by air, do you have any tips for organizing a lot of stuff in a carry-on?

Visit my blog:myelin36. Come read my Dirty Little Secrets

You could try vacuum storage bags as carry on luggage.

I travel regularly on planes and while rolling your clothes as opposed to folding them DOES give you a little extra room, I've found that the $25-35 checked bag fee is well worth it just for the peace of mind of having enough room for contingency outfits/shoes as well as for anything I might be bringing back with me.

I think I will take your advice and spring the extra fees for a checked bag. The peace of mind and anxiety worrying about traveling doesn't need to be compounded by additional stress!

Once again I'm no help- I rarely fly. I do know a thing or two about traveling light since I hitchhiked around the country and lived out of a backpack for a few years, but I sense that wouldn't be helpful to you.

Enjoy your trip!

Fly Southwest, checked bags are free!

Otherwise, rolling is the best way to conserve space. Sailors have been doing that for centuries.

You could wear extra layers of clothes on board. You'll be sweating on the plane though

I just returned from a short 3.25 mile run. No worries. I will get in a few runs while I am there.

I travel quite a bit for business and pleasure (just returned from a Sweden/Germany/Switzerland/Italy epic). I'd pay the baggage fee for two reasons. First, the obvious; no need to be stingy on what you pack. Second, is stress. It seems that 90% of flights, these days, are on regional jets, requiring you to gate check your bags (overheads are too small for rollaboards). Then, you need to wait until they return them to you before heading to your connecting gate. Because flights are rarely on time, by the time you get your bag, you find yourself running like OJ to catch your connection. However, your checked bag will make it. I've run to catch connecting flights, only to sit while my bag made it to the plane.

I see people have already given advise about rolling up, and doing laundry.

If you are fyling delta or othe rbig name airlines you can open an airline credit card for free bags.. Year 1 is no fee.

Another thing you can try is wear 2-3 layers (its bit harder for a woman, if you wear dresses only). I had an intern once who was visiting his GF in Colorado. He wore a t-shirt + shirt, + a v-neck sweater + a light spring jacket and then everything else he could pack in a hand carry.

I have seen certain people take hand carry and a back pack.

Hope your trip goes well...Do we expect to see "Benefit" added to the "friend"

No great "new" suggestions about packing that have not already been suggested. But I will wish you the greatest time with family!

Hugs

Bring only three pair of shorts, three comfortable shirts and two bikinis! That should fit neatly in a carry on! You could fit a pair of shoes in the bag as well! No need to dress up! It's vacation! AND potentially some fun where your clothes will be on a chair anyway! Hehehe!!! Hugs

Just be aware the temperature just dropped in NY!!! Cold here tonight! So bring a sweatshirt with those shorts. Beautiful during the day today though! Have fun!
