The Lynx

Before I start I want to warn you all that this will be in part a sports post.

As you may or may not know Minnesota has several professional sports teams. Including the major four. The Twins in baseball, The Vikings in Football, The Timber Wolves in basketball, and the Wild in hockey. But there are also several lesser known teams. The Swarm in Lacrosse, We have a roller ball team, whose name I’m sorry to say I don’t remember. I never understood that sport anyways. I don’t think we have a professional soccer team. We have a woman’s football team. We had a professional wrestling team when they tried to start a league a few years ago. I still have one of their T-Shirts actually. And in women’s basketball we have the Lynx.

Why am I bringing this up? Well the Lynx are entering the playoffs as the number one seed (We are playing San Antonio). Which is great I hope they do well. But that isn’t my point here. I was listening to the radio last night. I was listening to the local ESPN affiliate. It is these guys’ jobs to know about the sports they are talking about. Or at least have the information down in front of them. But these guys didn’t seem to know anything about the Lynx. They were even almost making fun of the league. These are local broadcasters that do only the local sports. I found that to be incredibly disrespectful to the Lynx.

They went so far as to ask if the Lynx win, can we count that as a championship for a local team. WTH!!!!!

I admit I don’t know much about some of the teams I mentioned. And no I’m not a big basketball fan. But then knowing about all the teams is not my job. It amazes me that with as far as we have supposedly come with equal rights. And here we are still discounting Professional Women’s sports. That is ridiculous. Sure they don’t bring in the money of the men’s teams. But is that really a reason to make fun of them? Heck no. Is it right to make fun of a team like the Pirates or the Twins because they don’t make the same amount of money as the Yankee’s or the Red Sox? Nope, the Pirates we make fun of because it has been more then a decade since they finished with a winning record. And with the exception of this year, recently the Twins have been just as good as the big money teams and often out played them. Even if the win didn’t go in their favor.

But if we are making fun of women’s sports just because they are women’s sports I can’t help but wonder if we have really come as far as we claim to have come. Why not go back to the days when the women could only dribble the ball twice while we are at it. Because sweating is “unwomanly.”

Thank you for listening to my rant. Have you seen any of these double standards recently? Care to share them? Any of my readers from the San Antonio area (or Texas in general) want to make a side bet about who wins the series?

I'm Texas through & through but not much of a sports fan. Other than the Cowboys who I stick by no matter the season I don't get worked up over it. I was sort of bah humbug even with both the Rangers & Mavericks having excellent years last year. So I won't be making any wagers, but I love your indignation at the blatant gender bias on the part of your commentators.

The gender bias was the main point of my post. It really made me mad while I was listening to it. The wager thing was just a joke so that the post had a little light heartiness.

we celebrate our woman pacers here but many do see themr as no so lady like if they are on the team.. we are no where near whee everyone claims we are. women still make less and hit ceiings in their career all the time.

If Love Is Not The Answer,
Then I Misunderstood The Question

Oh I know things aren't as far along as people say we are or or think we are. But the only way people will see that is if it is constantly pointed out to them.
