KATY and the neighbors...

Katy and the neighbors.

This morning, M. and I went to visit neighbors who have the Grim Reaper pounding on the door of their home.

They are a Texas minister and his wife. Both are on oxygen, and both were in a hospice last month for 3 weeks. For the sake of this post, I'm calling them Don and Mary.

They have a beautiful female Border Collie, Katy who is now five years old, and this post revolves around Katy.

If I'm able to find the picture of Katy in the photo gallery of THIS computer, I'll put KATY'S picture at the top of this post so those of you who love dogs can see the little darling.

Reverend Don, and his wife are a couple in their early eighties. I wrote about them last summer. Some of you old and dear readers, may remember the story of how I was contacted by Reverend Don by email regarding his new computer that the Reverend Don, couldn't get to do anything..

The asking for help for the reverend's new computer was really just a ruse to get me over to Don and Mary's home, where the reverend could quietly take me aside and ask if I would take Katy to live with me when Don was through with this earth.

Reverend Don and I got to know each other many years ago when Don inherited a five acre plot of sand with a falling down cabin a few miles from my place. I believe the year was 1992.

Since I've lived in this same house on the desert since 1976, Reverend Don and I became close friends. I helped Don demolish his old cabin, and build a new desert home in place of the old cabin.

During those years, Don and I worked closely together at hard physical labor. The knowledge that Don had been a very successful Christian Minister with a large congregation and still had many connections with religious people, sort of wore off me.

Don learned all my sins. Most of them sexual. He never criticised me. Don wasn't married to Mary at that time. His wife to be, a childhood sweetheart, was still living in Texas.

Reverend Don saw that a was always with me. Usually more than one dog. He learned by observation that I loved animals..

And so back to today.

Marisol and I went to the minister's home at 10:30 this morning.

A car load of relatives was just leaving as we got there.

When we went inside, a doctor and his nurse were just finishing up with forms to be signed and medications to be handed out and yada, yada, yada.

Katy knew me immediately and when I sat down in a corner living room chair to stay out of the way, Katy came to me, licked my hand, then lay down on the living room rug next to my chair.

Border Collies are at the top of the dog's smart chain. Katy knows Don, the man she adores, is on his way--kicking and fighting, and grasping at all the available vegetation-- off the edge of this world. Katy probably has even figured out that when Don passes on, and if Mary remains still alive, Mary won't be able to live out here by herself, and Katy will come to me..

After everyone had gone, and only the Reverend Don and his wife, and Marisol and I, and of course Katy were left. Don repeated to me that he wanted Katy to go with me, when his time was up.

Marisol and I were careful not to trip over the 1/4 inch oxygen tubes that were all across the living room floor like strings of spaghetti, giving both the Reverend and his wife the oxygen they needed to keep breathing.

Marisol and I returned home.

The reverend's wife can still take care of Katy. Katy is no trouble at all. The reverend's yard is all fenced, and Katy is free to go outside in the yard when she wants to.

Mostly Katy stays by Don's side waiting for Don's end to come. When it does, the Reverend Don will rest easy with the knowledge the animal he loves will go to a new home where she'll be cherished the way he cherishes her.... Amen.

Sammy is a lucky dog to have been able to be yours, Geneva. In many ways, you remind me of my German grandmother, and also my loved Imogene.

I think the animals who are the most happy, are those living with us older people, where we have the patience and gentleness to look after them without chaining them in a yard and throwing them a little cheap food when we think of it...

The Reverend's wife, Mary is a little skeptical of me, but she loves Marisol. Katy is stand-off-ish to both Marisol and Mary. She seems to like men. (The sweet little bitch, ha, ha ,ha!)

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved cat, Layla. People who've never had an animal friend, don't understand how those of us who love animals grieve when one of our little four-legged friends passes on.

I do believe God sends us our companions, and I hope you're on His/Her list for another soon.

Katy is now five years old, and will fit in with my two 11 year olds very nicely.
I fell in love with her when she first arrived at the Reverend's house. The way she licked my hand and lay down beside me made me think she really does know she'll be with me and Marisol when her beloved human dies. xxxxdavid
