ORIGINALITY

Last week I read in the Huffington Post that researchers have come up with a way of comparing Intelligence Quotients from years ago with the average I.Q.'s of today. The findings are NOT something that will make us modern types jump up and shout "Rah". In fact they're quite dismal. They've found--the researchers that is--have found, that modern man has lost 14.5 I.Q. points since the Victorian Age.(1835-1900).

So, if this research is to be believed, people are steadily losing smarts.

Some of the people with the highest I.Q.'s that I've rubbed shoulders with through the years are not necessarily the people who are the most productive or the people who are the most original. They're not the most charming or personable either, but they did all excel in some field like mathematics or languages, or yada, yada, that left me panting to try and keep up.

If any of you guys watch the flat screen and have watched the comedy series, THE BIG BANG THEORY, where the main characters are PHD's with exceptionally high I.Q.'s, you know what I'm writing about--and I suspect that the WRITERS of that BIG BANG show all have pretty high I.Q.'s too. All the characters on that show are portrayed as having strange personality quirks.

As I write this, my little brain is churning away, and I'm thinking of all the really HUGE advancements in EVERYTHING of today compared to the period of the British Queen Victoria--1835-1900--and I'm thinking this research quoted by the Huffington Post is probably another example of B.S.

What do you think? Do you believe the average person of today it dumber now than they were years ago?

I think that this research is missing something and is flawed. If so, in a few months or years, we'll find out, and the researchers will reverse their findings and tell us we're all getting smarter, and demonstrating more originality by the day. WHATEVER, right? We're all stuck in this world at this time, and unless we're time-travelers, there's no way to escape our individual realities. SO, my approach to life is to enjoy the half-full glass, and light a candle in my times of solitude to all those beautiful, giving--and original--people who I've had the pleasure of knowing and now know.

Actually, i've long been theorizing that we're dumber than we used to be. We assume we're smarter than our ancestors because of all the gadgets that we've got. However, i see this dependence on modern conveniences as a weakness. A flood or a hurricane or a snow storm knocks everything down, and we have no power... and we find ourselves completely helpless.

That's not the only reason though. We know for a fact that our bodies are physically weaker than those of times past, simply because we don't need to use them as much. Our bodies and minds are intricately connected. In general, when the body is weaker, so is the mind. We're not as alert, we're not as quick thinking, we're not as good as making difficult choices that are good for us. And that is a vicious cycle that just keeps spiraling downwards.
Thank you for your comment Violette001. I think you have valid points. I won't argue with you about the body and mind being intrinsically linked, but I have to interject the fact that we're now living much longer than humans did even 100 years ago. The main problem with our modern lifestyle as I see it, is that 100 years ago there were only 3 billion of us taking up space and using resources, and now there are 7 billion. We are like rats or rabbits, and are overpopulating our planet to the point where sometime in the near future, drastic measures will need to be taken for anyone to be able to survive on this little blue ball floating in space...xxxdavid

With people doing less for themselves of course we are getting dumber. We are losing our basic skills of knowledge. How to think for ourselves. Today's kids don't compete either making it hard for them to use their brain. Because, if you have nothing to outsmart what's the point of working hard.
I see your point Biunicorn, and thank you for your comment. I suppose I'm hooked on everything mankind has created during this past hundred and some years. I have a feeling scientists don't really have a "handle" on a way to properly measure creativity. xxxdavid
