Squats and Spackle, Take Two

I swear this place, this post-eating, lag time generating , half-assed notification place.
Imma write this again, just for shits and giggles.

So, I've been catching up on all the diet and exercise trends, watching make up tutorials. Let me just say that trying to find my me-ness again seems like a fucking lot of work. Two and a half years of menopausal depression has left me sitting in the dust when it comes to knowing about new discoveries in the arenas I need the most work in, diet and make up for the over fifties set.
I fear my vanity is overtaking my good sense.

The diet part, adjusting what I eat and when I eat is not difficult, it is just a pain in the ass. I am a through to the bone Southern style cook, and I've spent the better part of forty years tinkering with recipes to create crispy fried chicken with perfect crunchy skin and juicy tender meat, fruit cobblers and pies with buttery crusts and enough sugar to give a person diabetes just from the smell. When it comes to cooking a heart attack meal, I'm a contender. People love my cooking and I'm not going to be able to eat most of it, even on a cheat day. But after getting on the scales last night, it's going to be at least a year before I can even consider a cheat day. There's a lot of work to be done.

Me, before I started growling at mirrors.

The problem is not the food, it's exercise. For now, I have it covered. I do laps in the pool along with some aquasizes. The water lifts the weight off the joints and I can work out for an hour without crying in pain and hearing my joints sound like a piece of sandpaper being drug across asphalt. And it is working. I was able to get out and take some short walks without coming back home and going straight to bed with a heating pad. I've been using the two youngest minion as free weights too, the giggles make exercise less boring.
Go me!
But summer is winding down, and unfortunately all the indoor pools I could have access to open too late and close too early to accommodate my work schedule. Plus there is my natural squeamishness about public pools. I have seen one too many get in and stay in for hours at a time. And I know, I just know, I'm going to be swimming in what amounts to toilet water.
Yeah, but no.
Just no.
So, gentle readers, I'm open to suggestions on an exercise routine that is low impact for arthritic joints in the lower back, hips, and knees. Which sadly, is where I have always had problems keeping toned.

My once upon a time makeup look. Which now makes me look like I'm auditioning for the role of Pennywise.

My other problem is what to do with my skin, which is starting to look a lot like a topographical map of the Grand Canyon. I need to slow this avalanche of my face, tone up the turkey wattle under my chin and find a filler for some of these deepening wrinkles that just keep cropping up. (My wtf lines could grow a plant or two if I just rubbed a little dirt in them.)
I've watched hours of tutorial videos on skincare and makeup for women over fifty. And they are confusing and contradictory, but I think I've got the basics, I need cleanser, antioxidant moisturizer, retinol, eye cream and sunscreen. The sunscreen seems a bit redundant, because most of the things I've looked at have sunscreen in them.
Then I need a foundation primer, concealer, foundation, blush and bronzer, and a finishing powder to lock everything in place. I don't really like the idea of contouring, I'm not wanting to spend three hours playing with putting on make up, I've never liked heavily weighted make up and all this spackle I'm going to need already feels heavy just reading about it. So the contouring is not going to happen.
But which products are worth the investment? There are tons and tons and tons of stuff out there, and while I know the cheap stuff is not worth buying, I'm not someone who can or ever will feel comfortable spending half a paycheck on makeup products. I need someone to tell me what the hell I need to buy!
Help, all you beautiful women, tell my woefully out of touch self what works for you.

And now you've heard my pleas, the minions are ready for our romping, so love peace and chicken grease!

Wait...no chicken grease...I'm so bad at this.

"Shall I tell you the secret of the true scholar? It is this: every man I meet is my master in some point, and in that I learn of him."

I'm totally on board with getting healthy and eating better and making arthritis a little easier to deal with (ahem, notice I have zero suggestions on how to do that)... but makeup?????

There is NO makeup that doesn't make women look older when they wear it unless they're under 20. Don't do it. Moisturize, maybe mascara and lip gloss but good old fashioned exfoliation and oil of olay are the best friends to have!

wildnwanton replies on 8/2/2017 6:27 am:
I have a real need for a light foundation, when I don't use it I look like a raccoon because I'm a fortunate soul who was born with incredibly dark circles around my eyes, they have been like this since I was a kid. When I don't wear it people ask me if I'm sick or just tired. (My standard answer was always "both".)
And then there are the wrinkles. Oh. My. God. So many wrinkles that are going to get incredibly deeper when I get rid of this weight.
I've started a new skincare regime, so if this helps I will likely use just a little concealer and a bit of light foundation to blend it all together. If I can luck up and find something that matches my skin tone well enough, I mean get even get away with just using it around my eyes.
I got to be honest, the thoughts of putting on five layers of makeup wasn't making me happy. I've always been able to just use a little light foundation in the past. But now it just creases and makes my face look like a bad pop art drawing.
And for going out I've found a new way to do my eyes with a very neutral matte eyeshadow that just brightens my eyes a bit and a nice thick mascara. The woman I work for is a makeup guru and she was able to help me figure out some different styles. Now if I can find the right combination of cleansers and toners!

I have a pool and I do the maintenance on it, I am going to need winter workouts. Tai Chi! Why didn't I think of that! I have looked into it before and was interested, but didn't get any further than that. Thank you!

I've decided for the time being I am going to follow a 1400 calorie diabetic diet, may crank that down to 1200 once I get my sluggish metabolism kicked into gear so that I won't hit that ten pound slump where the loss time slows. My metabolism has always been on the slow side but I worked my butt off, most of my jobs entailed manual labor, and power walking for hours at a time, so it wasn't hard to burn off what I was eating. Chasing my little rug rats around doesn't burn half as much.(But they are wonderful to use for free weights lol, the littlest of the three will laugh and say "Again, again!" when I do overhead presses with her.)

Easy Yoga for Arthritis by Peggy Cappy...I got that as a freebie from PBS years ago during a pledge drive but never used it after the first few weeks. It was good stuff.

I cannot help with the diet...I am an ice cream junkie...and haven't worn makeup in years so you're out of luck on that one too. Heck...I don't even put on sunscreen most of the time and I know that is a no-no.

Yoga does look like a way to go, but if I do it, I'll do it at home. The minion horde arrives at 7am, and they don't leave until 6pm most days.
And I'm willing to sacrifice most everything I love (read cheesecake, fried foods, and chocolate) but my blissful morning cup of coffee before they arrive is not going to be replaced with a frantic run to the gym or a yoga class lol.
(Im so darned happy you are still here. It gives me hope that there is still some life left to this place.)

I do recumbent elliptical. Knees are stronger and less pain and a 40 pound wt loss. Avoid impact on knees. Avoid the drive throughs. I stopped diet drinks. They just stimulate your appetite and destroy your bones. Good luck with this.

wildnwanton replies on 8/1/2017 5:45 pm:
I will check it out, there is a gym just a little way from the house that just opened that I could walk to. I really have no space for any kind of equipment here, I have kids here and their things take up more space than the furniture lol.
Fast food and diet soda aren't a big thing for me, I worked in fast food for a long time and I really don't like it. I am a victim of my own cooking and a deep abiding love for a perfectly cooked ribeye. And midnight munchies of peach cobbler and ice cream...and being too damned depressed to care.

wildnwanton replies on 8/1/2017 5:46 pm:
Thank you for the advice though, and for the wishes for luck. Just writing about that cobbler tested my strength.

Oh I'm swimming every day, I'm looking for something to work with this winter. And I'm in search of that girl, she in here...buried for a minute. I'll bring her back if it kills me though. This weight is just too damn much.

OK, got it, but I'll tell you what I tell ALL my female friends when they announce weight loss plans - "Well...OK...IF you insist, but nothing off the boobies!"

Sorry love, the first place any woman loses weight is in the boobs lol. And even with the weight gain, I'm still only a b cup. This girl is a founding member of the IBTC, lol.

I can't be much help with make-up tips, but do tend to agree with the others about not going overboard - well unless the situation calls for the wh**e-ish look, which can be fun a fun game too!!

I'm all about swimming, the best overall exercise, and a great way to at least tone, if not actually reduce. As far as finding an ool (that's a pool without the p), ehh, that's what the chlorine is for, just don't swallow (in THIS case!).

ANOTHER great pic, and this time the credit goes to the model!

Try Laura Geller on QVC. She has most of the products you listed and often there are online video lessons on how to apply.

Ah now McWild, please hold off the make up, it's never appealing when you lean in to peck a lady on the cheek and kinda get stuck for a split second on the way back.........!!

There are few things in life more beautiful than a beautiful mature woman aging with grace, just my opinion anyways. I've never seen the current you, but if the past you is anything to go by, I'm sure you fit that bill.
I have to agree with the kilted one. Makeup-wise less is more and could lead to more . . . make outs.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I got to tell you, the idea of putting on layers and layers of makeup has never been my thing. But ack! Neither is looking like a raisin in the sun lol.

Well, I've never worn a lot of foundation, I've been blessed with good skin, but man...these wrinkles are killing me, Smalls. And with a large weight loss they are going to get worse. Might just see how the skincare stuff works to start, maybe I won't need the spackle lol.

You make my mouth water....and I don't mean just from the food

Oh if only I still looked like this lol. That was ten years, one hormone shift, and 100 lbs ago. If I have to have my jaws wired shut, this weight is going though. It is for my health. This is making arthritis unbearable, not to mention what it is doing for the depression.
