The Virtual Symposium Returns: Let’s Pick A Topic!

Our eleventh virtual symposium (Participants List For The Eleventh Virtual Symposium On Doors andor Bridges andor Gates) brought out a number of creative interpretations. It was also another topic suggested by a contributor – bravo! Folks are always encouraged to suggest ideas.

Ready for the twelfth symposium? Let’s pick one topic from those listed below, and on the morning of Sunday, September 26 I’ll provide a central landing page which will have links to all contributors’ offerings. No matter which topic we ultimately choose, I hope folks will warp it as wildly as befits their personalities. Essays, fantasies, poems, image collages, other artwork – the more offbeat the interpretation, the better!

Be sure to leave a message somewhere on this blog indicating that you've made a contribution. I get notifications here faster than through any other channel...

A note: While we’ll accept contributions all day, this site’s problems with links going live should come as a surprise to no one. The earlier folks post their contributions, the sooner, it seems, links go live.

Regarding the symposium itself, the only two rules are: A ) Please post as early on the chosen day as possible, to allow for maximum exposure (and, quite frankly, so I’m not glued to my desk all day), and B ) the posts should be entirely original, as opposed to commenting on other posts from the topic. Ideally, posts should be created beforehand, and put on the site on the designated day. (The comments sections, of course, would be fair game!)

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing. They should definitely let me know, once they’ve posted, that they’ve done so in the comments section on the blog: I get those notifications faster than through the site email system.

And… this is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons or bling awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so through this post, so on September 26 I can link to their posts. Oh, and consider this permission – nay, encouragement – to the symposium and link back to this post! I’d like to make sure folks interested in participating have the opportunity to do so. , , – and remember, pimping is a great way to influence your topic of choice.

Electioneering is perfectly legal, here… so feel free to leave reactions, persuasive arguments, and snide asides (about topics, but NOT bloggers) in the comments section below.

So what topic will we use for the next virtual symposium? I’ve listed four – I think they’re general enough that, whichever one we end up choosing, most folks should be comfortable offering reactions. At any rate, here are the choices. Feel free to electioneer in the comments, below, for any you find particularly compelling.

Voting for the topic will close at end-day on Sunday, September 13.

Participants are encouraged to note in their contributions that they’re part of a communal effort and provide a link to the central page (adding that link retroactively, after I’ve created the central page, would be very helpful): Doing so allows someone who stumbles on one individual’s blog item to enjoy as many of our pieces as he/she wants… and further strengthens a sense of virtual community.

that vote -- newbie participants are always welcome!

Thank you in advance for your participation! And yes, reading and enjoying counts as participation. Pick that topic!
Faustian bargains (deals with the devil)
Bad erotica. Really, really, really bad erotica (maximum 250 words) written by the symposium participant
A fantasy that should remain a fantasy
International intrigue
Other (Write it in below. Longshot, but… why not? One of these days a write-in is going to win!)

I enjoy writing challenges and I do enjoy writing erotica. I am really intrigued about the challenge of writing the best "bad" erotica that I can. It's a concept that I hadn't thought of before.

Nor had I... and once I did, I couldn't wait to suggest it!

Writing good erotica would more of a challenge for me than writing bad erotica!
I quite fancy some international intrigue!

International Intrigue could this be something like James Bond or even a place that has yet to be obtainable by plane, train or automobile or even a boat or maybe even Austin Powers the international man of mystery hmmm???
International intrigue could be anything a blogger chooses to interpret it as... heck, it could be a review of all the different ethnic food carts near his/her home!

Once again, interesting selection of topics.

Badly written, superbad erotic story based on Goethe's Faust and situation in Middle East - would that count as "A fantasy that should remain a fantasy", I wonder...

I think this is probably the best list of topics yet! What I know about international intrigue would fit comfortably in a thimble...OK, maybe in a condom. A small one. Still, there are some terrific possibilities here. I'm not gonna vote, even though bad erotica invites plagiarism on a grand scale. I could be content with any of these topics, and each one ought to deliver an entertaining symposium.

Thank you! I'm trying something new with the "Write bad erotica" possibility this time around... I may, every few symposia (thank you for the lesson on the plural), I'll offer the possibility to be creative in a medium, as opposed to on a topic... I tried this before when I suggested "offer something visual" but it was trumped...

I suspect that your take(s, if PD joins us again) on international intrigue, even from a claimed know-nothing perspective, will be terrific!

Looking forward to seeing which is chosen... and what contributions result!

I'm not sure I can write anything bad, not that I'm writing anything recently. The one that really interests me is the deal with the devil, like Ghost Rider. After all, aren't we doing just that being on this site?

Heh... if that's the topic that interests you, than campaign for it shamelessly! Hope you'll participate regardless of the topic: I've found that some of the best contributions come from people's second, third, or even most-hated topics...

I dunno about this bad erotica idea. Fine, great if they all get read... I tried to read em all last time, and I'm sure I hit 98% of them... But I do not wish to spend a Sunday reading bad stuff, and will prolly have a lower percentage if this one is chosen.

Plus, I kinda find most erotica boring. However, knowing all these perv... er bloggers as I do, I will be preparing for this topic as the winner.

Whatever it is, I'm gonna give ya something different. No. Bent serves better. It will be truly bent.

That's the spirit! One of the topics didn't sit well with you, you gave some eloquent reasons for not supporting it, and indicated that you'll participate no matter what is chosen!

Bent is best... thank you!

International intrigue is in the lead for now, superbad erotica is on it's heels....

Looking closer at all of the offered topics, they could be linked in one way or another. Faustian bargains made in international politics and in some dark erotic stories. Combine the two, and you get "A fantasy that should remain a fantasy".

International intrigue, at least according to some literature and most movies, involves sex.

Hmm... I think I'm repeating myself.

I haven't voted yet, just sitting back with bowl of popcorn and thinking out loud....

One's mind rather explodes with possibilities, doesn't it?

The 250-word limit will make this topic work, if it wins.... the joke of bad writing wears thin after about a page. But at this length, I'll bed -- er, BET -- we'll get some fantastic contributions...

Rest assured that if this topic doesn't win, you'll see it again at some point. Actually, all four of these topics are likely to crop up again: People seem to really like all of 'em!

Now, I'm not saying that I have a very bad idea for this topic... but I'm not saying I don't, either.
