Virtual Symposium on Sapiosexuality: Scientists And Swinging Offer A Balanced Equation

This blog entry is part of the thirteenth virtual symposium, an informal collection of bloggers who – purely for the hell of it – voted for a single topic (“Sapiosexuality -- The Intersection Of Smarts And Sex”) and agreed, on or about November a, to post their interpretations of that topic. A continually updated list of participants can be found here: Participants In The Thirteenth Virtual Symposium Sapiosexuality Intersection Of Smarts And Sex

There’s a special sort of brilliance that comes with advances in the hard sciences: Those with it have a cold, keen, logical approach specifically designed to break down the mysteries of the world through math.

Doesn’t exactly sound like the sort of people who’d be fun to hang around the chip bowl with on Saturday nights, does it?

Turns out that the hardest of the hard-core scientists are no strangers to erotic adventures. Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who is largely unable to move unaided due to advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, was once a guest at the Freedom Acres clothing optional swinger lifestyle resort based in San Bernardino, CA.

Hawking, who was twice married, was single when he went to the Freedom Acres club, according to “A brief history of the time Stephen Hawking went to a sex club: University says physicist visited California swingers' club with friends,” an article in the UK’s Daily Mail.

He was accompanied by “an entourage of nurses and assistants,” according to the Daily Mail, which also claimed the good professor paid for erotic dance performances.

Hawking clearly has a taste for the prurient. The Daily Mail also noted that he was a regular visitor to London’s Stringfellows nightclub. The Daily Mail quoted nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow, a self-described Hawking fan, as saying Hawking is “…[e]asily one of the most intelligent men in the world with one of the finest brains and on top of that so brave he takes my breath away - but he’s very human with it.

“I remember asking him if he’d like to have a conversation with me about the universe or if he’d just like to watch the girls. The answer was quite simply, ‘The girls.’”

Hawking is but one in a line of brilliant physical scientists who indulge their erotic desires. According to “Einstein, Feynman, and Other Famous Swingers: Getting Physical,” which ran in Seed magazine, in 2005 “researchers in England published a study purporting to establish a link between creative output and number of sexual partners. As the lead author (under)stated, ‘Creative people are often considered to be very attractive and get lots of attention as a result.’

“The theoretical physicists of the 20th century were no exception.”

Unfortunately, Seed lumps “skirt chasers,” flirts, and “lamentable philanderers” in with swingers. The latter, when involved in relationships, pride themselves on honesty and openness in their extracurricular activities. Sadly, many of the scientists named – including Marie Curie, who is painted as a home wrecker – don’t come across as ethical in their behavior.

Others seem somewhat piggish. The late Richard Feynman, who shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1965, “claimed a foolproof method for bedding women,” according to Seed. (Feynman was a funny bastard, and it’s entirely within his character that he might do so: His autobiography paints a picture of a man who lived with his tongue firmly in his cheek when it wasn’t otherwise engaged.)

According to Seed, “’Libertines, both male and female, have always been around in math and physics,’” says Jennifer Ouellette, who writes on physics history and is associate editor of the American Physical Society’s newsletter.”

That said, don’t think scientists’ erotic adventures distract them from essential duties. As Seed notes, “While once floundering on a problem, Erwin Schrödinger shacked up in an alpine villa for an extended holiday with “an old girlfriend” and, in the “late erotic outburst” that followed, produced the eponymous equation that would net him the Nobel.”

Yowza! Move over, Hugh Hefner: Johannes Kepler demands a place on the mattress!

The truth – appropriate for disciplines that reward hard truths – is that the truly brilliant enjoy getting their cookies just as much as the rest of us do. Seed quotes Feynman on mind and matter: “Physics is like sex: Sure, it may give some practical results but that’s not why we do it.”

I'm sure Feynman would agree with you! Thank you!

Thank goodness for that! If they weren't human, there would be no stopping them!

Dieu merci pour cela! Si ils ne sont pas humains, il n'y aurait pas de les arrêter!

Amen to what you wrote, and I'd even add that every single human being practices his or her own variant sexuality...

if deviation is that which breaks from the norm, and everyone's sexuality is different, then everybody except one person is a pervert, right?

Okay, so it ain't quantum physics. I never said I was a rocket scientist...

Absent some very powerful medications, it's difficult to have sex continuously over an evening without the occasional break. If one happens to bump into someone with an advanced degree in particle theory, or who is especially keen on movies, or who specializes in wood carving, go for it!

So what did you discuss?

Hey, if scientists are that willing to embrace their sexuality, they're better than human... and the rest of us have a chance to join 'em, no matter what we studied (or whether we did at all)!

What fun it is to eavesdrop on other people's sex lives! It's so common for us to look at someone else and make up our minds about what his personal habits must be, without any real data to support our conclusions. And then, to be shocked and titillated when we learn we're completely wrong.

From Messalina to J. Edgar hoover to Marv Albert, sex is endlessly fascinating to us. We all do it- if we're lucky and none of us understands it, not even Hawking, who said that women are the biggest mystery in the universe. Obviously that's what prompted him to investigate them.

What a fun post this is to read! And you've got me thinking about emergentism again. That oughta get me laid!

Loved this particular post. You should consider contributing regularly to the virtual bloggers symp- what? Oh Humor! I'm sorry, I get so used to encouraging others that I forget myself.

I have been studying how in sustained creative endeavors like NaNoWriMo, what helps it? I loved it where you mentioned that after some sex, Schrodinger managed to write the very thing that won him a Nobel! Here I was thinking day dreaming was good for solving problems.

The observant make the best lovers,
I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

I love the idea of being able to be sexual under any circumstances, and I adore the idea of Steven Hawking, dirty old man. It gives me something to look forward to, although I think I'll skip the decades of theoretical physics study.

Didn't see the quote you cite from Hawking, and it's a disappointment: You mean there's a scientific method to his madness? That does take away some of the sheer hedonism of his actions.

Personally, I've got some deep, deep research into Reichian orgone therapy to complete. Or start, for that matter...

Hee hee hee... you naughty girl. People have been spanked for less insolence... but you make up for saying that it was an automatic (conditioned) response, so not flagellation for you...

I, too, have had deep thoughts immediately after sex. And if they ever come up with a Nobel Prize for sandwich making, I'm going to be a shoe-in.

Was running out of space -- and it didn't apply to swinging -- but there was a bit in the Seed article about the scientists who were working on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.

Apparently they were a pretty licentious group. Robert Oppenheimer (the so-called father of the atomic bomb) was asked to get the group to cool things down. He didn't.
