The Thanksgiving (American) Virtual Symposium Approaches: Let’s Pick A Topic!

The thirteenth virtual symposium (Participants In The Thirteenth Virtual Symposium Sapiosexuality Intersection Of Smarts And Sex) was among the most contentious – people either loved the topic and what it represented, or felt it was overused and ill defined. However they felt about it, the contributions were, as usual, well-considered and a lot of fun… and in many cases, educational. Good show, good show!

How about another round of essays, fiction, poems, photos, erotica, personal memories, artwork, and all-around goodwill and support of fellow bloggers: Ready for the fourteenth? Let’s pick one topic from those listed below, and on the morning of Sunday, November 29 – yes, American Thanksgiving weekend – I’ll provide a central landing page which will have links to all contributors’ offerings. No matter which topic we ultimately choose, I hope folks will warp it as wildly as befits their personalities. The more offbeat the interpretation, the better!

A suggestion: Since A ) it will be American Thanksgiving weekend and B ) there have been a few site hiccups, I’d recommend writing your contribution in either a word processing program or (if you don’t want it hanging around on a shared computer) an email you send to yourself. On symposium Sunday, all you’ll have to do is cut, paste, and place images. Oh, and once I’ve put up a master list, if you could edit your post and provide a link so your readers can enjoy the other contributions, that would be jolly good show…

Once you do, be sure to leave a message on this blog indicating that you've made a contribution. I get notifications here faster than through any other channel...

A note: While we’ll accept contributions all day, this site’s problems with links going live should come as no surprise to anyone. The earlier folks post their contributions, the sooner, it seems, links go live.

Regarding the symposium itself, the only two rules are: A ) Please post as early on the chosen day as possible, to allow for maximum exposure (and, quite frankly, so I’m not glued to my desk all day), and B ) the posts should be entirely original, as opposed to commenting on other posts from the topic. Ideally, posts should be created beforehand, and put on the site on the designated day. (The comments sections, of course, would be fair game!)

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing. They should definitely let me know, once they’ve posted, that they’ve done so in the comments section on the blog: I get those notifications faster than through the site email system.

And… this is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons or bling awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so through this post, so on November 29 I can link to their posts. Oh, and consider this permission – nay, encouragement – to the symposium and link back to this post! I’d like to make sure folks interested in participating have the opportunity to do so. , , – and remember, pimping is a great way to influence your topic of choice.

Electioneering is perfectly legal, here… so feel free to leave reactions, persuasive arguments, and snide asides (about topics, but NOT bloggers) in the comments section below. Also: A comment or two here will increase the symposium’s visibility… and it would be nice to affirm what the blogosphere can be.

So what topic will we use for the next virtual symposium? I’ve listed four – I think they’re general enough that, whichever one we end up choosing, most folks should be comfortable offering reactions. At any rate, here are the choices. Feel free to electioneer in the comments, below, for any you find particularly compelling.

Voting for the topic will close at end-day on Tuesday, November 17. this vote… and let’s get some newbies involved!

Participants are encouraged to note in their contributions that they’re part of a communal effort and provide a link to the central page (adding that link retroactively, after I’ve created the central page, would be very helpful).
Doing so allows someone who stumbles on one individual’s blog item to enjoy as many of our pieces as he/she wants… and further strengthens a sense of virtual community.

that vote -- newbie participants are always welcome!

In my time on the blogs (since January 2015) I have noticed that the term "Friends with Benefits" (FWB ) has been batted around A LOT. There are varying definitions and LOTS of posts about it. Perhaps that is a subject we could write about. Maybe, just maybe, we could come up with a common definition. That may be a useful service to nearly everyone here.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

PD likes numerology, and if she likes it, so, do I.
I know nothing about it except for what infiltrates my brain through osmosis. I don't understand it, I don't get it, I don't grok it. But I'm fairly confident I could bullshit my way around all that. I'm also fairly confident it won't win, so I make points by voting for it and I can offer solace when it loses and it's just a win/win all the way around for me.

Perhaps, we could expand on FWB and compare it to some other arrangements?
There are at least 6 posts in my blog related to FWB, NSA and/or sexual dating. I can do more! *not caffeinated yet and giggling silly*

I could do "First dates" or "Pose a question", or research "Fetishes".
But, "Numerology"? I dunno. I looked it up, followed instructions and added up all appropriate numbers. Came up with most ridiculous result! Nah, numerology is not my thing. (But it produces pretty pictures!)

I'll vote after coffee...

I included numerology as a tribute to PD -- you'd mentioned earlier that she was interested in it. Quite frankly, I'm terrified that this topic will win someday: I have no idea as to what I'd write about, given my blog's focus on swinging in the media.

If it ever does win, I may put a prohibition on writing about 69. I'm not much for rules, at least as far as the symposium goes, but I may have to put my foot down in that instance.

I salute you for taking full advantage of your win-win opportunity! And really, we have to figure out a way of giving PD her own vote... That's not a gift: Her contributions have earned her that right.

aw geez! That time of the month again? Oh brother. Sorry, I am just not a lot of fun, I'd say chalk it up to that time of the month, but, well, I'm not sure it applies in this case. Sorry just cranky I guess.
Heh... and speaking of which, the next two symposia are going to be at odd times: This one is Thanksgiving weekend, and the next one will be either on Dec. 27 or Jan. 3.

I'm up for recommendations... holding off until Jan 3 strikes me as a long time, but Dec. 27 will be right and the end of the holiday push.

Then again, I think the symposium is the perfect excuse for avoiding family...

No need to discuss it now: Let's get this one underway first. But if folks want to think about which date would be better, I'll revisit the topic after this one is in the books.

I'm always open to modifying symposia topics -- the broader they are, the more room for interpretation there is. (This is part of the reason why I'm amused when people tell me they don't understand the topic: There are NO wrong interpretations... there's only contributions and non-contributions.)

Caffeinate and opine! Get silly! Big spider right behind you!

You just never know how that might work out- I did NOT care for the Sapiosexual topic, but it turned out we had a hell of a lot of fun with it. I make a big deal out of not facing challenges and not accepting them either- those who turn and run away live to fight another day. But it's a lot of fun to stretch yourself and try to make something out of nothing- my whole blog is like that.

A post you write about numerolgy and swinging could turn out to be the best damn piece of work ever.

Thanks for thinking of PD- she was on that numerology without a glance at the others. And we're happy with voting the way it stands- one blog, one vote. If you give her the vote, next thing you know she'll be wanting to use the car, get a job, select her own reading material. You have to nip that kind of shit in the bud.

I see numerology as basically anything having to do with numbers, as opposed to the specific act of calculating the numerological value of names. But your point is a fair one: This topic, when modified, should be broadened considerably to "anything you want to write about involving numbers -- except 69".

As I've said, above. I don't feel like slogging through 50 posts on 69.

Just my $1.14 {0.02 cents, U.S,, adjusted for inflation}

First Dates
The ones that are, usually, remembered, are more warnings than stories, js.

Numerology
My father was born 1/14, my brother 3/14, my mother, me, my sister all 7/14 {all different years}, and I've found beyond being a conversation piece, it means bumpkus, so nah.

Fetishes
What is one person's fetish is another person's normal and/or their lifestyle. Can anyone even agree on a correct or mostly correct and full definition.

Pose a Question (I don’t have anything specific in mind for this… interpret it as you will!)
I am always full of questions; this is not necessarily helpful, however.

Other (Write it in below. Longshot, but… why not? One of these days a write-in is going to win!)
The coffee has still not kicked in, not enough; insert odd/weird/unusual response here.

So, surprisingly or not, I would have to go with...fetishes; I've done enough blog posts about them, many of which got censored by the ptb at a f f, so...whatever.
