goodbye to a teacher and friend

Sad news in the house today as I have learned that my Biology teacher and friend crossed over on Saturday. What can I say about this wonderful man? He was a bit perplexing at first. He had a different teaching style. One that I would come to like and appreciate. He was truly a man of the world, traveling about seeing things. He was my Botany and ecology Prof, along with my adviser.

The adventures we had. Wading through chest high water and finding a fresh rattlesnake shed. Being hung by my legs off a Cliff to scrape some moss off the rocks. Hiking all over Southern Ohio, the Smokies, parts of Mich. He was just as interested in animals as the plant life.

Of course his dry sense of humor was never far. I being the source of some of it. He was an artist at one time, living in New York City. He was a published Poet. He also did stunt work at one time too.

He was a great teacher above all. He gave us these take home tests. 4 or five questions long. It sounds easy, but the questions were very detailed and he expected perfection, along with a dash of you filling in the blanks of what he did not cover. A single question would take 4 to 8 pages to cover. He really wanted to see how much you learned and could apply.

Even after college I still worked with him. Learning more and over the years started to teach him a thing or two. It felt good to feel that the circle that had started that fall day in 1981 had come back so that I could give something back to him.

I will see you some day friend. Help me to remember what you taught me.

keeping you in my thoughts today

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.
