The moment
The moment I got a note from Janelle a few weeks ago. I'm in the city this semester sans Chas. Would love to hang out sometime if you're up for it. xoxoxo Janelle She moved to Nebraska with Chas this spring. She's back in town to finish up her doctorate. She got an apartment near campus and her baby is with her. Her mom came out from California to help her watch the baby for a few months. I visited with her mom for nearly an hour when I came to pick Janelle up. Janelle was putting the baby to sleep, and he just wouldn't go down easily. It was ok. Her mom was a nice lady. "How do you know Janelle and Chas?" she asked me. "Mutual friends," I told her. I wasn't sure how much Janelle had told her mom. The answer I gave her was a good, multi-use, vague response that satisfies most people. It did the trick this time too. Also, it sounds better than, "we are sometimes fuck-buddies." Well, we fucked once at Rand's party. But it was enough for her to think of me. She had been in town for a month, with just school and family, and no fun. Apparently, she had an itch she needed scratched. I was more than happy to help. And there's not much more point to this story. We had some dinner, then went back to my house. Tricia strategically spent the night at Reno's. The sex with Janelle was fun and satisfying. "This night worked out well," she said, as she kissed me goodnight, back at her apartment. I chuckled a little on the inside. She sounded like a doctoral candidate, tallying up a spreadsheet; remarking on the results of an experiment that had pleased her. I'm not sure what she had been expecting. I figured she just wanted sex, dinner, and some adult conversation that didn't involve statistics. I guess I delivered on all of those. I also figured that she didn't want to be tied up with a "boyfriend" while in the city. I haven't really spoken to her since our date. Other than to ask her out again, which she agreed to. I'll see her sometime this week. She'll leave town again in a few weeks. Then, I probably won't ever see her again. That's ok. There was a time in my life when I may have had some trouble letting go. Janelle and I are not the BEST of friends, but, if nothing else, she is a really good booty call. I'm a bit older now. I've learned to appreciate things as they are. Sometimes, it surprises me how much I'm able to enjoy the moment, without obsessing about the future, or anything else for that matter. My mind is sometimes prone to obsess. Maybe, when you get older, things don't seem so urgent, and "moments" can last for several months, when you think about them in terms of a lifetime. While Janelle is in town for these few months, this is a moment we're both enjoying. |
