TONY SOPRANO

James Gandolfini died this week; he played the mafia mobster, Tony Soprano, in the fantastic American television series, The Sopranos. In 2013, the Writers Guild of America voted The Sopranos as the best-written series in television history. The opening song to The Sopranos is the song, Woke Up This Morning, performed by Alabama 3.

Alabama 3 are one of my favourite bands to see live – see photo. They are not from Alabama; they are from Brixton in London. There’s not three of them; there’s loads of them. Their music is a mix of rock, dance, country and gospel. Live, they are spectacular with their fusion of music styles, ever-changing line-up, Stetson-wearing guitarists, and the antics of the two vocalists, Larry Love and The Very Reverend Dr D Wayne, who often seem pissed or stoned when performing. Alabama 3’s Nick Reynolds is the of Bruce Reynolds who was convicted, along with Ronnie Biggs, for the 1963 Great Train Robbery.

Other memorable live gigs I’ve been to include Roxy Music in the mid-1970s, Joy Division, The Cure, Primal Scream in their Screamadelica phase, and Nouvelle Vague, whose two French chanteuses sang a cover of the Dead Kennedys’ Too Drunk To Fuck song while dancing on a bar.

Released in 2000, Alabama 3 did a brilliant cover of the Eagles 1977 hit, Hotel California. I would go as far as to say Alabama 3’s cover is better than the Eagles’ original, despite the Eagles original being ranked in the top 50 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone and the guitar solo being voted as the 8th best guitar solo by the Guitarist magazine. Gipsy Kings, Marilyn Manson, Nancy Sinatra and Tangerine Dream, among many other acts, have also covered Hotel California.

It is rare for a cover to be better than an original. The only other cover I can think of that is better than the original is Run-D.M.C.’s cover of Aerosmith’s Walk This Way song.

Did you enjoy The Sopranos?
Do you like the music of Alabama 3 or Eagles?
What’s the best musical act that you’ve seen live?
What’s the best cover song you have heard?

Did you enjoy The Sopranos? YES! I would say it's in the Top 5 best written...Mad Men has to be #1 though.

Do you like the music of Alabama 3 or Eagles? Both

What’s the best musical act that you’ve seen live? Paul Thorn. Actually from Alabama. WE had gone to a concert to see John Prine which Paul Thorn opened for. He is funny and a great story teller between songs. George Thorogood is another small venue great show.

What’s the best cover song you have heard? Smash Mouths "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby". There are so many great covers though.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I never really got into the Sopranos.
Love Alabama and Eagles (I am big country music fan)
I have seen Johnny Reid twice and he even gripped and shook my hand while singing.
Best cover song is "Today I'm Going To Try And Change The World" by Johnny Reid.

Mad Men is great but The Sopranos is greater! I also enjoyed The Wire and Homeland.

I've not heard of Johnny Reid; I'm not very knowledgeable about country music.

I've not come across Balanescu Quartet before I read your post. Having just Googled them, I'm going to check their music out.
