TWOLIPS ARE MY FAVOURITE SPRING FLOWERS

My apologies, I suffer from an occasional visual lisp. Faire la bise, pecking two lips on someone else’s cheeks, is a very common greeting in France and elsewhere.

In Brest, a French city in Brittany, a group has been launched to defend the Breton custom of giving just one peck on the cheek. The Group for the Rehabilitation of the Single Kiss, or GRUBUB for short, is dedicated to defend the single-kiss against the increasing use of the double-kiss in the city.

GRUBUB, on its website, warned against “the exponential growth of the double kiss”. It observed that “this barbaric practice has taken a foothold in the city of Brest” but didn’t know “why, how and who is spreading this insidiously dangerous practice”. GRUBUB is campaigning to “reverse this trend” and urged Bretons “to politely refuse the second kiss”.

The single-kiss is practiced in the north-west of France, the treble-kiss in the very middle of France and the quadruple-kiss in some areas east of Paris. However, the double-kiss rules in most of the country, including Paris. Usually faire la bise starts with the right cheek, but the left cheek gets kissed first in eastern France and in parts of Provence. Kissing is difficult in France and that’s even without going into French kissing!

At work I shake hands with men and women. Outside work, I still shake hands with men but I greet women, though not Muslim women, with a single kiss to the cheek. With close friends there may be a hug.

How do you physically greet people?
Do you faire la bise? If so, how many kisses?
If you kiss one cheek, what cheek do you kiss? Or, if you kiss more than one cheek, what cheek do you kiss first?

My visual lisp has now momentarily disappeared. Tulips are my favourite spring flowers!

I had no clue how complicated a kiss could be.

If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin."

I always behave. Preferably not well.

Depending on the circumstances...usually a hand shake and a hug for the ladies. I married into Ukrainism and it is customary to give three kisses on alternating cheek. I don't have a preference which cheek first..whichever one sticks out first.

It depends on the situation....something formal would be just a handshake but with family and friends it's a hug and a kiss on the cheek....and the same when saying goodbye.

You'd think that in a city that is called Brest - 2 kisses would be mandatory!

I hug and kiss friends and family. Anyone else, I offer a hand and see what they do.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

In Glasgow the forehead is used to thump the bridge of the nose of the person being greeted. ( Known as the Glesga kiss).

I loved the title of this post!
When I worked in film and tv, people you were just introduced to would kiss you on the cheek. That bothered me and I would stick my hand out. If I liked them after that first meeting, then upon the second one I would kiss their cheek in greeting, otherwise, out would come out the hand, again. After a while, people noticed that I did that, and would remark on it. Well big hoo hah, I also don't fuck (usually) on the first meeting, either. And I know that is exposing my prickly part of my spirit but it was the truth for me.

A hug is much better than a kiss on the cheek for those you're close to.

That's interesting. I will hug male and female friends but I don't brush a male friend's cheeks. I have much to learn!

Three kisses - as an English man, I've only just got used to one kiss on the cheek!

My way of greeting people is a warm hug. I'm not for kissing people other than a relationship partner or an "intimate friend" and that would usually be on the lips. The bane of human existence is that ludicrous act of "air kissing" which the more pointless members of humanity seem to do.
I'm more of a hug than a kiss person, though I will go with the flow in a social situation.
