TAYLOR SWIFT NOW DELIVERS CHINESE TAKEAWAYS

Psychologists have long found that the sense of touch, smell, sight and sound also significantly affects our sense of taste. Our tongue's taste buds alone don’t determine our sense of taste and our enjoyment of food.

Professor Charles Spence, an experimental psychologist at the University of Oxford, and Dr Betina Piqueras-Fiszman, a researcher at the Dutch Wageningen University, wrote the book, The Perfect Meal. They found, for example, that the person in a group who orders first in a restaurant enjoys their food more and that we consume about 35 per cent more food when eating with another person, rising to 75 per cent more when dining with three other people.

More recently, Professor Spence conducted a study of 700 volunteers who ate different kinds of takeaway food while listening to different types of music.

The professor found that pop music makes Chinese food taste the best (eg Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran); classical music is best for pasta (eg Puccini’s Nessun Dorma, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons); rock music goes best with Indian food (eg Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Guns N’ Roses); and jazz music plays best with sushi (eg Nina Simone).

He found that RnB, hip-hop and dance music didn’t enhance the enjoyment of any cuisine.

Professor Spence’s research findings are being used by top restaurants (eg Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck restaurant) and companies (eg PepsiCo, Unilever). For example, the Shanghai restaurant, Ultraviolet, serves its fish and chips dish with Beatles songs playing and the Union Jack flag projected onto the dining table.

Don’t be surprised when ordering your next meal that you get asked what music you want as an accompaniment. Sorry, make that two spring rolls and one chicken chow mein with Taylor Swift!

Do you regularly listen to music when eating food?
What type of music do you enjoy listening to over a meal?
Do you ever change the music for different foods?

This evening I’m going out to have a meal at a Malaysian restaurant. I will order beef rendang, one of my favourite dishes even though it looks like food!

Unfortunately, The Perfect Meal book doesn’t tell me what music should be played when I eat my beef rendang dish. I think I’ll order the waiter to play The Doors very loud regardless of what other diners want to listen to!

Customized music sounds like a great idea!

But I don't want my waiter to ask me what I want to listen to. Deciding what food to order is a big enough decision already!

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Do you regularly listen to music when eating food? No, my parents were serious about only conversation at meal time, so music was out. Guess it just carried forward

What type of music do you enjoy listening to over a meal? SILENCE!!!! Actually light conversation

Do you ever change the music for different foods? When the kids were younger, the only change was to OFF. Now no music. In fact, if the restaurant is playing it loud , I will leave and go some where quieter

My sense of taste and smell did not fair well after brain surgery (which I found out is very common). I have memories of how food taste but food rarely lives up to the memory. Textures and what I eat now. LOL
I do enjoy music while dinning. I like jazz, blues and classical for dining. I do agree, Italian is much better with classical or Frank Sinatra, really, any of the Rat Pack.

Do you regularly listen to music when eating food?
sometimes and sometimes the TV.

What type of music do you enjoy listening to over a meal?
Not particular but listening to HipHop or is not conducive for good digestion!

Do you ever change the music for different foods?
No....the study seems arbitrary....sort of like the wine for different foods rule...Red for meats and Whites for fish...with so many varieties today....it's whatever you like...no more hard fast rules regarding wine color and food pairings! Thus, listening to music would be the same...do what you like!

Do you regularly listen to music when eating food? Not really.

What type of music do you enjoy listening to over a meal? Classical music on the background quiet enough to have a conversation without straining my vocal cords.

Do you ever change the music for different foods? I never felt that different foods required different music. I always believed that music was for people, not food.

High five on The Doors, Spunky!

Do you regularly listen to music when eating food?
Rarely. I used to, when I was a kid.

What type of music do you enjoy listening to over a meal?
I never really thought about it...

Do you ever change the music for different foods?
Nope.

I can't listen to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" anymore. That damned "Four Seasons" movie with Alan Alda and Carol Burnett ruined it for me. I'm like Alex in "A Clockwork Orange"....the music has been destroyed!

I have country radio on all day 'til suppertime. Thats about the time the wife turns on the TV! I don't purposely put music on, but if it's on, I don't turn it off!
I don't care for Taylor's new style of music, but I love her country singing!

Do you regularly listen to music when eating food? no not often, sometimes I prefer quiet.
What type of music do you enjoy listening to over a meal? doesn't really matter
Do you ever change the music for different foods? only to turn it off or turn on something quieter. But it truly doesn't matter. I don't like dining in a restaurant when the music is so loud that you must shout to be heard.

I do hope your dish is really of beef and not dog. I hope it tastes better than it looks.
I assure you beef rendang is a lovely dish for humans; the beef marinated for a day is so tender it melts in your mouth!
I too prefer quiet when eating food, whether I'm eating in or out.

    Quiet over a meal!
Do you ever change the music for different foods?
I don't relate food to music but maybe I should!
I like quiet when eating. Muzak in restaurants can be quite annoying!

Sometimes, especially in restaurants, we can have too much choice. What type of table, what type of bread, what type of water, etc!

My parents insisted on conversation over a family meal. I wasn't even allowed to read at the table!

The texture of food is important to me too, which is the main reason why I don't like a lot of seafood.

I often eat my meals in front of a television. Often, I time my meals to coincide with my favourite television programmes!

I've never really got into classical music. I'm sure it's because, while at school, the music teacher just rammed classical music down our throats!
