IT’S BEHIND YOU!
IT’S BEHIND YOU! "It’s behind you!" is a classic phrase uttered in pantomime shows. Pantomime is a form of musical comedy designed for family entertainment. It was developed in early eighteenth-century England, though pantomime can be traced back to sixteenth century European theatrical traditions and even Ancient Greek times. In England, Regency tastes fot the grotesque and the violent gardually gave way to Victorian tastes for the whimsy and the slapstick. Panto is still very popular in England, especially during the Christmas and New Year season. Panto shows are often a mainstay for actors and actresses to earn a decent income. Panto is roughly based on a well known fairy tale. Popular fairy tales used for pantomime are Aladdin, Babes in the Wood, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Dick Whittington and His Cat, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Mother Goose, Peter Pan, Puss in Boots, Sinbad, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and The Wizard of Oz. In every panto show, there’s a dashing hero (eg Dick Whittington), an innocent heroine (eg Cinderella), a crone (eg Snow White’s Wicked Queen), and a sinister villain (eg Jack and the Beanstalk’s giant who says "Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman, Be he alive, or be he dead I'll grind his bones to make my bread"). Panto is scary! Panto involves lots of audience participation - much cheering and much jeering when the panto villain appears on stage. As well as shouting "He's behind you!", shouts of "Oh, yes it is!" and "Oh, no it isn't!" are always exchanged between the panto actors and audience. It also involves lots of slapstick comedy with topical humour, risqué double entendres and mild sexual innuendo, as well as music, dancing and singing. Often panto actors play gender-crossing roles. The principal boy, such as Cinderella’s Prince Charming, is invariably played by a young actress; and the old dame, such as Aladdin’s Widow Twankey, is always played by an older actor. Have you been to a pantomime show? If so, what panto shows have you seen? What’s behind you? I love panto! I ‘ve seen Aladdin, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and, two days ago, Dick Whittington. Behind me are bookshelves filled with books, strangely! |

Have you been to a pantomime show? No- but you make them sound like great fun. What’s behind you? Just my tired old ass. OK, and my desk. And the windows that surround the west end of the house. And the apple trees. The apple trees are there. Al Sabo is there too, and we just had new snow, so I think I'll go there. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I love panto....I think over the years I must have seen them all....first with my parents, then my children and now my grandchildren. We go "en masse" with cousins etc and are probably the noisiest crowd in the theatre, What's behind me....the back of the sofa....and a wall covered with family photos. ~~Anais Nin~~

Have you been to a pantomime show? No I have not. What’s behind you? My bed, dressers and the rest of my bedroom furniture. One of my daughter's favorite bedtime stories was Jack and the Bean Stalk along with the Gingerbread Man; both are kinda scary. I guess we all liked to be scared every now and then. What was your favorite bedtime story Hugh? What would happen I was behind you!

I think cross dressing will get parental approval. Unfortunately you are a nomad of the present that leads to a better and more tolerant future for others.
