THE APOSTROPHE IS DEAD
THE APOSTROPHE IS DEAD It is now official; the apostrophe is dead. This site no longer recognises the humble apostrophe. Not only does it steal little words, the site now translates the apostrophe into gibberish. Here is an example: ItâÂÂs so cold that I canâÂÂt feel my handsâ fingers, but IâÂÂll continue to type out this eveningâÂÂs post. This site wonâÂÂt update itsâ codes meaning that itsâ members canâÂÂt read what IâÂÂm writing about. ItâÂÂs a shame ⦠or perhaps itâÂÂs a blessing! In 2001, the Apostrophe Protection Society was founded with "the specific aim of preserving the correct use of this currently much abused punctuation mark". However, in December 2019 its founder, John Richards, disbanded the Apostrophe Protection Society because no one seemed to care about the punctuation mark. In Bristol, an English city, there is a grammar vigilante who secretly adds an apostrophe to street and shop signs where an apostrophe has been omitted. He is the equivalent to Banksy but in the world of grammar. Strangely it is believed that Banksy is from Bristol; perhaps Banksy is also this grammarian guerrilla as well as the renowned street artist! Do you use apostrophes correctly? How good is your grammar? Are you a grammarhead? I am a proud grammarhead; in my job I had to be correct in my grammar. And, just as my academic colleagues picked up on any of my grammatical errors, I took delight in correcting any grammatical mistakes made by my students. It is not easy to explain how an apostrophe should be used without using an apostrophe in action, but I am going to have to try. The use of an apostrophe is quite simple. There are two main uses of an apostrophe. First, an apostrophe is used to denote there is a missing letter when writing a word. Second, an apostrophe denotes the possessive case of a noun; in other words, it indicates that something or someone belongs to something or someone. Inside are some examples of the uses of an apostrophe; the site only mangles apostrophes used in posts not in comments on posts! |
|||
|
It’s is not the same as its’. It’s means it is. The apostrophe denotes that there is a missing letter in conflating two words, other examples include can’t, don’t and shouldn’t. Its’, often written as its, means that it possesses something or someone. Other examples of this use of the apostrophe are a company’s customers, a government’s policies and a man’s cock. A very common mistake in using apostrophes is when people use them to denote a plural of something. Plural nouns never have apostrophes with the exception of a few cases, eg minding your p’s and q’s.

You know I do use apostrophes the way they are supposed to be used. That is not the only thing that seems to be dead on the site. Also the letters N, O, T. and certain numbers as well like THREE. I have recently had to go back in to my blogs, and comments and fix them. I just wish the site would fix all the glitches once and for all as it would make the site more fun and the bloggers would blog more. Do you use apostrophes correctly? Yes I do How good is your grammar? I always got straight A's in English. Are you a grammarhead? I don't know about grammar head, but I do know how to use my grammar well. This was a great read today, and I hope your Friday is a great start to your weekend..

Irritates the hell out of me that such a basic bit of punctuation as an apostrophe cannot be used here. Then what do expect of phone users. Some cannot be bothered to use any punctuation or even capital letters. Lazy Ignorant Git is the term that comes to mind. If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin." I always behave. Preferably not well.

Another use for it is as a single quote mark, which I tend to do when informally writing what someone else said. I suspect that kind of usage is only truly correct when it happens inside of double quotation marks. Perhaps this new glitch will break that bad habit on my part.

As someone who had an English teacher for a mother, I try to get my apostrophes correct although sometimes I do struggle. David Mitchell had a great rant on QI over the public's use of apostrophes especially when advertising - he thinks the printing companies know the correct use but they just make whatever the customer wanted knowing they'll get repeat business when someone points out the mistake. Do other languages use the apostrophe as much as it is found in English? I know the French use it (in c'est for example), but is it as prevalent in German, Italian as it is in English?

Come over to mine and check my grammar! [post 4424702] I think I use apostrophes correctly. However, I always make sure to say it is (in my head) before I write it's though... its and it's can be confusing and if I'm using speech to text things can really get muddled up. Come on by when you can and bring your marking pen.

The site takes out apostrophes, but in a blog title the A's don't show up unlike in a blog post. But in a blog comment the apostrophe survives!

I’m from Texas. My grasp of the English language is amazing. My use is horrifying. British English doesn't mean much here. There's Irish English, Scottish English and Welsh English as well as English English. Within England, there's Oxford English, Northern English, West Country English, Essex English, London English, Scouse English, Geordie English, Brummie English etc. When I speak to a Glaswegian, I generally haven't got a clue what they're talking about!

You're quite right, this site's system is fucked. But at least the site allows apostrophes in comments! I can have an apostrophe outburst with this comment - ''''''' - I feel better now!

The most important thing with language, including grammar, is that we're understood. Sometimes punctuation makes it easier to be understood. Written words without a full stop (you may say, period) is hard work to read because there's no break for the reader to pause to take in what's meant.

I've just re-read my reply to ensure there's no grammatical mistakes, though I'm not sure whether it's P.S. or PS. Have I missed a period?

In the German language I suspect the apostrophe is used less because they have separate words for anything possessive. Its' book is sein Buch in German - I knew my schoolboy German would be useful eventually!

As you say, it's best to write to be understood whether that's proper or improper English. I've stopped using the apostrophe in my blog posts.

If I came across someone with a "I am silently judging your grammar" purse, I'd speak very properly just in case they have a weapon in their purse!

It has been amazing to watch one bug after another come to lite on this site over the 10 years. Lol It's a mystery about your sideways photos. I've not had that problem. But I do have a problem with adding a tenth photo allowed by the site. If I upload a tenth photo, it gets combined with the first photo uploaded!

Grammarhead? Basically yes. But I share my knowledge of English with the translator, who sometimes translates poorly. Occasionally an apostrophe can get lost. But I think my results are not that bad. In other blogs, entire words are often missing, not just the apostrophe. One of FriendFinder-x's smallest problems .. Nachrichten an mich>> Privater Briefkasten Mailbox
