On December 28, 1832, John C. Calhoun became the first vice president of the United States to resign, stepping down over differences with President Andrew Jackson. Hailing from South Carolina, Calhoun began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. Calhoun served as a member of the House of Representatives and Senate, as the seventh Vice President of the United States, and as secretary of war and state. Calhoun was the first of two vice-presidents to resign (the second being Spiro Agnew in 1973), and the second and last vice-president to have served under two presidents.
