The Kingdom of France controlled the Louisiana territory from 1699 until it was ceded to Spain in 1762. In 1800, Napoleon Bonaparte regained Louisiana for French ownership from Spain under the Third Treaty of San Ildefonso. However, Napoleon decided to sell Louisiana to the United States. The U.S. paid Bonaparte $11,250,000 and a cancellation of debts worth $3,750,000 for a total of $15,000,000. Napoleon used the money to finance his planned invasion of England, which never took place.
