Michael Jordan studied geography at the University of North Carolina. After a three-season stint playing for coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of the Tar Heels' national championship team in 1982, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. Jordan returned to school during the off-season to work towards his degree. In December 1986, he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. One day a newspaper reporter asked him why he studied geography. Jordan said, "I knew I would be going places in life, and I just wanted to know where I was when I got there".
