Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. The first Christmas trees in Germany were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and apples. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted<b> candles </font></b>to the Christmas tree. Most historians agree that the first decorated trees appeared in the U.S. in the mid-1800s. The trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans
