The first Christmas trees in Germany were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and apples. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted<b> candles </font></b>to the Christmas tree. Most historians agree that the first decorated trees appeared in the U.S. in the mid-1800s. The trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans
