Library

Originally, the library was supposed to be simply a legislative library, holding documents that the members of Congress could access quickly. As the library grew, it started including copies of all books and other works that had a copyright in the United States. Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson had advocated building and expanding the library because they, and especially Jefferson, thought that Congress needed access to information about as many topics as possible in order to do a good job making laws.
