Frigga, Queen of Heaven

Frigga, Queen of Heaven

My nimble fingers are
Screening through
My wheaten hair...
The sky-candle fills
My body with heat

The oarsmen pull,
Straining...
Their sea-stead-vessel

(Endill's )

Upon the rhythm
Of our father's sea,
The waves ride
The whale-road...
Offerings into the
Depths, demanded

and

Kennings, skalds
Created for him.

It is a kenning to call a battle a spear-crash.

Let us compose them.
Maidens will mouth them,
Harolding him.

Yes-

We all dance for Endill's pleasure.
Even I, who is wed to Odin.

And,
Fenrislfr
Is a monstrous wolf
Odin must fight.

Will Odin be the victor? Many questions.

I see them out there
Upon the black wet
Above us, my Spinning
Wheel, my distaff,
The cloud of stars
Whirl delightful -

Meanwhile

This high-up cliff,
Gentle whispers are
Streaming -

Salt breezes
My falcon
Feathered-cloak
Whips around
My warrior torso -

My lashes sting. Is it the prick of sand?

Will a slave girl
Offer to join my
Odin on his pyre?
In the feast halls
Of Valhalla she would
Be his queen...

What would I be?
Shall I pour the golden mead in her stead?

The shore is
Roaring quietly
The eb and flow of
Rock strewn sands,
I prefer to walk
The boggy marshes,
The tiny pecking
Birds that swoop
Amongst the grasses,
Delight me with their
Antics...

A shoot of wood
Grows west of Valhalla.
It seemed too young for me
To demand its oath.

For a moment
I forget, till
Spying that fatal
Plant upon the
Pathway - reminds me -
In these moments
I am chastised

Yes, I shall pour the mead. Tears of gold will fall.

"Frigg" means sexual intercourse in Modern English. Consider the importance of this - that the Queen of Heaven should bear such a name. There is no prudery here, nor any snickering innuendo. Instead there is healthy delight in sexual activity and pleasure, and celebration in fertility which makes life possible.

In Faroese (the language of the Faroe Islands of Iceland)'friggja' means to woo (as in ask someone for a wife) which makes sense, since Frigg is the protector of marriage. Here we see the linkage between the Goddess of Marriage and marital delights.

As Woden/Odin gave his name to Wednesday, and Thunor/Thor to Thursday, so Frigg is remembered in Friday. Frige-daeg, Friday, is further equated with dies veneris, the day of Venus, the love-goddess so revered by the Romans.

Frigga was the direct of Fjorgyn, the Goddess of Earth. She kept her own hall, called Fensalir. She was wife to Odin, All-Father, and is herself an All-Mother. Women prayed to her for and prayed again for safe labour and delivery.

Frigga gave birth to the kind and beautiful Baldr, and tried to protect her from death itself by requesting a pledge from every thing in the world not to harm him. She neglected however to ask the mistletoe, and it was with a small dart of this symbol of Winter resurrection that Baldr was felled. She is thus the Sorrowing Mother as well as the lusty bed companion. But when Frigg wept, her tears were of pure gold.

Hmmm...yes, I suppose it is finger-speech.

You are welcome. As before, I wonder what in particular you found enjoyable and if anything was less than pleasing.

Dear Mz. Goddess,

I am so glad you enjoyed! I know sometimes this sort of work takes a few moments of contemplation...one must at times process new ideas. But I believe most people enjoy that sort of experience (at least sometimes). I learn too, when I write them. I look up stuff and compare stuff and connect stuff in new ways. It's fun!

Warmly,

MT
