What do you see in this picture?

During the late 60s and early 70s a bike like the one pictured was my , airplane, car, unicorn, pegasus, chariot, boat, yacht, and any other mode of transportation my mind needed in a dream. I rode the same paths of a local park day after day, but my mind soared through the world.

My happiest moments of youth were spent riding as fast as I could, the wind against my face, my mind spinning new dreams.

I'm a year and a half older than my little brother. When I got my first bike, he learned to ride it before I did. However, he was only three and a half or four and a half. His attitude was the same as yours. One day, he disappeared. All the mothers in the neighborhood started searching for him. Soon my mom's cousin arrived with him. My brother had taken himself to our great aunt's house in search of cookies.

Sssssh, don't tell my daughter. I'm always after her to ride with a helmut. She does on longer intercity routes, but often doesn't on shorter local rides.

Did you know that boy's bikes in good condition are worth more than a girl's version. The reason being that boys used theirs harder and often destroyed them, therefore there aren't as many around today. Mine, was used like a boy's bike would be.

I adored that bike. Unfortunately, I had nowhere to keep it when my parents were moving out of my childhood home and we gave it away. I would have loved saving it. But, hopefully some kid enjoyed it after me.

Just looking at the picture of it cheers my spirit.

When I was a child, there were no bicycle helmets. They were developed in response to accidents that caused brain injury or death.
Obviously not everyone has such an accident, but I have ridden with cyclists who fell hard and only suffered recoverable injuries because the helmet took the head impact.
I will not ride without a helmet, and I do not allow my children to ride without one.
