Eroticism in Literature Continued
Eroticism in Literature Continued Many colored throned immortal Aphrodita, of Zeus, wile-weaver, I beg you with reproaches and harms do not beat down O Lady, my soul But come here, if ever at another time My voice hearing, from afar You have ear, and your father's home leaving ----golden --- you came Yoking the chariot. And fair, swift Doves brought you over the black earth Dense wings whirring, from heaven down through middle air. Suddenly they arrived, and you, O Blessed One, Smiling with your immortal countenance Asked what hurt me, and for what Now I cried out. And what do I want to happen most In my crazy heart. "Whom then Persuasion ..............to bring to you, dearest? Who Sappho hurts you. And if she flees, soon will she follow, And if she does not take gifts, she will give, If she does not love, she will love Despite herself" Come to me now, the harsh worry Let loose, what my heart wants to be Done, do it!, and you yourself be My battle-ally. The above is a translation of the ancient Greek poet Sappho, from the isle of Lesbos. She was born somewhere between 630 and 612 BCE (Before Common Era, the new non-religious oriented dating system that has replaced the old AD/BC designations). Naturally, it loses most of it's impact just by being translated. It can be seen, however, the way in which she has used language to convey her meaning in a sensual, emotion filled manner. Now, please don't think you need to run to the classics section of your library to find good erotic literature. There are some amazing modern erotic writers out there. Those interested at all in erotic literature will have at least heard of Anais Nin, A.N. Roquelaure (Anne Rice pseudonym) or Cleo Cordell. These are easy, they are located in your Chapters/Indigo Erotic Lit section. There are other authors, however, that are amazing erotic writers that are NOT found there. Laurell K. Hamilton is, in my mind, one of the current best erotic literature writers of the day. She can be usually found in the General Fiction area. She is simultaneously writing two series, one about a female vampire hunter, the other about a modern day princess of Faerie. Modern, as in co-existing with humans in modern day. I highly recommend them. Here's an example: "I opened my mouth to say, don't, but three thing happened all at once. They each struck into the neck of the man on their side, as if they'd known exactly what the other would do, and Jason forced me over that shining edge of orgasm. I screamed, body bucking against the bed, and only their weight kept me from sitting up, from clawing the air, because it wasn't just my own pleasure I was feeling. I felt Asher's fangs in Nathaniel's neck, felt Nathaniel's body build, build, and finally release in a rush of pleasure that made him bite down on my breast, made me score not his back, but Asher's with my nails." Narcissus in Chains, Laurell K. Hamilton, co 2001 Note the cadence, or rhythm, of the passage. The tension is created through the rhythm, transmitted to the reader through an excellent use of commas, culminating in the orgasm of Nathaniel and not the storyteller, which helps to underline the storytellers assertion that 'it wasn't just my own pleasure I was feeling'. Stop and think about that for a minute. Imagine being able to actually FEEL your partners orgasms. Hmmm. World peace, anyone? Back later. Hope someone is enjoying reading this as much as I am writing it |
