The enemy is us...
The enemy is us... Probably the most famous Pogo quotation is "We have met the enemy and he is us." Perhaps more than any other words written by Kelly, it perfectly sums up his attitude towards the foibles of mankind and the nature of the human condition. The quote was a parody of a message sent in 1813 from U.S. Navy Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry to Army General William Henry Harrison after the Battle of Lake Erie, stating, "We have met the enemy, and they are ours." My view exactly, but probably a bit more pessimistic as fits the times. While the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia might be a good thing, the odds are against it. Human nature is the problem. Christians note that people are inherently sinful, and they claim the death of Jesus redeemed us and made eternal life possible. I have my doubts, though it is a nice thought. Part of the problem is our evolution. No matter how highly evolved we try to be the primitive part of our brains, referred to as the crocodile brain, remains to bedevil our best attempts at rational behavior. Self interest warps our views and politics. The debate over global warming shows the collision of science and avarice. Not surprisingly, avarice and self-interest wins every time. People know that better health comes from eating less and exercising more. So obviously intelligent humans would be thin and very fit. Look around at your fellow Americans and see if that logic has been followed by most. Partly our evolution is again to blame. We evolved in a time of scarce food supplies and learned to overeat when food was available, to make up for fasting at other times. We still gorge ourselves despite the abundant food now cheaply available. We know to avoid fat, salt, excess calories and cholesterol. Do we? The more you consider human history and human behavior, the better you like dogs and horses... While I try to be cynical, I cannot keep up with current events. Still I am not morose, as that only punishes me for our collective sins. I remain hopeful despite my experiences and observations. Things might change for the better, as you never know... |

lessons from past history should serve as though we are standing on the shoulders of wise men however, as You said, we repeat the same mistakes...as a Christian, I think our heart can mislead us along with bad thoughts which give birth to sin as well as many factors such as mental or emotional illness....abuse endured somewhere in one's life and when not faced, worked on....it will lead us to deeper and deeper troubles. We have to have hope, despite our experiences. Some things manage to improve over time.
