free range

A news report of another arrest for letting walk to and from school got me thinking. In this case the ten year old and six year old walked a mile through a park to their home. The police were called, investigated and arrested the parents for neglect! Prior to the eighties, this behavior was considered normal.

Now there is a counter movement called free range ! Sounds like free range chickens.

The nanny state is becoming too intrusive. My Libertarian impulses are kicking into a higher gear. Some believe there are molesters lurking behind every tree. Sex traffikers do exist, but they are rare in the suburbs....

Most sex abuse is done by parents, relatives and family friends, not total strangers in broad daylight.

Some after watching the movie Jaws refused to let their go in the ocean. Fatal shark attacks kill about 30 worldwide. So your odds are about one in two hundred fifty million that a shark will eat you. The most active sharks are in the tropics and Australia. So on California beaches the odds are closer to a billion to one. Better chance of winning the Powerball lottery.

If you want to worry about likely danger, be concerned about driving, riding a bike down the street or walking across the street. Don't text and drive or talk on a cell phone and drive.

Do you want to live your life ruled by fear and paranoia? Do you want to have the police arrest those who refuse to hover over their ? People are born free but live in chains....

I suspect you will get replies from people telling you how bad your thoughts are and the comparison you did of children to fowls. But I am not one of those people. I understand the gist of your posting and let me assure you that I whole heartedly agree that as a society we have become more involved with what we used to consider parental rights. I am not going to sit here and do a comparison of how it was for me growing up and what we did in those days like “walking to school five miles in the snow and uphill each way!” That would be ludicrous, just like that saying!

There is fine line of being involved with parenting as a society and protecting children. It is a gray line actually, on one hand we as a society want our children to feel safe, grow up and go to school and be a productive member of society. We want our children to feel safe and not in fear. But what is it telling a child if they decide to go for a walk. Can you imagine a child thinking “if I go for a walk, my parents could be arrested!” You get the idea? Talking about fear, what is this?

Once again, I agree with your sentiments!

I think people get into a mind set that no harm can befall a child, and therefore we must protect these precious children. I understand the impulse. But you cannot treat a child like a Fabrege egg to be wrapped and boxed in a museum and taken out for ceremonial occasions.
