Being rich

I never expected to become rich, because I was like most Americans, spending money as fast as I made it. Sometimes faster. But rich has a way of sneaking up on you.

Like the millionaire next door, if you own a house, a car, a business and a retirement account or two, eventually if you do not die too soon, get entangled in litigation or divorce, you eventually get rich.

The shattering recession of 2008 killed a lot of people's finances. Those who pulled out of the stock market and housing made a huge mistake. Over time the losses came back. If you could hang on.

Those who were over-leveraged could not wait. They took the loss and died financially. My brother<b> owned </font></b>15 houses, and they all got foreclosed. Then he went bankrupt. Now he leases a house and has nothing. Bad credit history and no real assets. Too much leverage is a killer in a down market.

Rich is better than poor as Sophie Tucker noted. But rich has some downsides. When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose. You are free and willing to take any risk. Who will sue someone with no assets? When you got lots to lose you are more constrained. You also are obligated to help those who need assistance. Noblesse oblige they called it.

When you don't have a pot to piss in you are excused from lending to others. If you are rich you feel some may want you just to grab your money. This suspicion can take the fun out of dating.

As I age, I realize young women are only interested in me for the commission. Still, I do like the attention I receive at Nordstoms from the sales girls, as they remind me that I once was attractive... I thought about making a mask from my 25 year old pic and wearing that, but I would probably get arrested except on Halloween...
