compassion?

I don't give money to beggars usually as I am not sure they deserve my support. I rather think Salvation Army, Goodwill Ind or other private charities can help more than I can with a small amount of money. I don't like to stop and hand out money as well due to the danger of stopping and showing money on the street.

So I get knocked for a lack of compassion. I feel somewhat shamed but I also feel that I am not obligated to replace the poor decisions that someone made about his or her financial well being.

I also have a problem with begging as a vocation. It is low paid and degrading "work". With a 3.6% unemployment rate one can get a job if you want to try to do so. Being homeless makes life difficult, but often there are friends and relatives who can help. If the choice is begging that seems to me the wrong choice. Should I encourage wrong choices?

In the sixties the request was for spare change. I was poor then and did not have much to spare. So I had no spare change. Still don't, I guess. It is not spare if I can spend it on something fun or useful.

Do you spare money for beggars? Why or why not?

We had some street corner beggars in our town for a while. It turned out they were "pros" who shared a house (in a nearby town) and a nice van. The van needed a tire repaired and the tire shop owner recognized a couple of the riders and saw their signs. They were gone not long after that.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I find I lost the trust to believe the person is really needy instead of a scam. Sad that the world has come to this... I think pro beggars are sinful....
