i wonder if this makes me a buddhist.....?
i wonder if this makes me a buddhist.....? lately I have been 'fortunate' enough to be cc'd onto a rather vitriolic email chain between 2 of my best friends. the subject is a tricky one, religion, so let me state up front that I mean no offense to anyone who reads this... see one of my friends is an atheist, and the other has recently re-discovered his faith (no, he isn't born again, he's just started observing again), and as you might expect would happen this has led to friction between the 2 of them and in the chain they have each been trying to convince the other around to his own point of view. both are convinced that the other is, not just wrong, but incredibly wrong and it has now gotten to the point where they wont speak to each other in person... and if things keep going this way then even the emails will stop soon too. so the moment I have dreaded has finally arrived... each of them has asked me what I think. now the interesting thing here is that both know that i have gone back and forth between agnosticism (as it states in my profile) and outright atheism, and when i was younger i used to love to join in these types of arguments convinced that i wasn't just winning the argument... but crushing it. a dozen years and about twice as many friends fewer and i came to, what was for me, a startling revelation...take all of the information in a 'does god exist' and boil it down to its essence and the argument looks like this: atheist to theist: prove to me, scientifically, that god exists. answer you cant but: prove to me scientifically that he doesn't... afterall it took mankind over 2000 yrs to prove the existence of air and yet it does exist! atheist to theist: so how do you know god exist? i believe theist to atheist: so how do you know god doesn't exist? i believe there is no god see a common theme there? let an atheist say what he wants... but since the existence of god cannot be conclusively scientifically dismissed then what we believe is just that.... a belief. so it all just comes down to what you believe, and my advice to my 2 friends was just that... believe what you do, stop fighting, and buy me a six pack of beer damn it! |
