Top Ten Smartest Animals 5 - 1

Top Ten Smartest Animals cont.

05. African Gray Parrot

Parrots in general have long been know for being able to mimic human speech but the African Gray, found in the West and Central Afrian rainforest, is able to associate words with their meanings and can form small sentences. The birds communicate with each other through body language and songs. They are accomplished mimics and can recreate voices and household noises perfectly, can be trained to have conversations and perform activities.

There are stories told about a couple of specific parrots. One named Alex can identify over fifty objects, seven colours, five shapes and a numerical value up to six. He can tell the difference between big and small, over and under and when he gets bored with testing will tell his handlers "gonna go away."

Then there was the African Gray in Nagarey, Japan who was somehow separated from his owners, was wounded and had been sent to a vet. While there the bird started chatting with the vet proclaiming "I am Yosuke Nakamura." He gave his full home address right down to the last number, and was returned home but entertained the hospital while there with a song and dance routine.

04. Elephants

Elephants in many cultures are seen as a symbol of wisdom and are well known for having incredible memories. They can create mental images and are said to be able to remember exact locations of watering and feeding holes they haven't visited in years. All species, of which there are three, the African Bush Elephant, the African Forest Elephant and the Asian Elephant are thought to inherit the same genetics. They have amazing hearing, using ears and trunks, can communicate by bellows, roars, trumpet-like calls and can transmit sound over long distances using the ground. Elephants have been noted performing a variety of behaviors, including actions associated with making music, compassion, grief, play, and the advanced use of tools. They an recognize themselves in mirrors, can identify themselves as independent and have a sense of artistic achievement, having the ability to paint portraits of themselves. I just watched an amazing video of an Asian elephant painting a three-dimensional picture of another elephant. It blew me away.

03. Rhesus Macaque Monkey

The macaque genus is the most widespread in the world next to humans. They are well know for their intelligence and as a result have been used etensively in biological and medical research. They have the ability to learn, make self-decisions, use facial expressions that are similar to and can be understood by humans. Rhesus monkeys have displayed suicidal tendencies, planned attack and are socially complex. The have detailed vocal systems similar to human forms of communication. Genome sequencing has shown humans and macaques share 93% of their genetic DNA.

02.Bottlenose Dolphins

Whales and dolphins are members of the cetacean family and are considered to be the smartest Animals inhabiting the world's oceans (not that it stops certain nations such as Japan from indulging in the slaugthter of both and euphemistically calling it scientific research.) Yeah sure, and I'll bet they've got some bridges for sale too.

The Bottlenose Dolphin can be found in warm waters throughout the world and is the smartest species of dolphin.

They have a very large brain with a cerebral cortex and frontal lobe 40% larger than a human's. Social communication, abstract information processing and problem solving are all functions of the cerebral cortex. The Bottlenose have the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas, learn from experience and are the easiest dolphins to train. They hunt prey using echolocation and communicate with each other using squeaks and whistles. These dolphins have on numerous occasions shown remorse for other species and have exhibited signs of a conscience. In a recent story from New Zealand a dolphin named Moko saved two beached Pygmy Sperm Whales. The whales had been stranded for hours when Moko appeared and led them through the sand bars to freedom. It was a wonderful sight for the locals and made the New Zealand national news.

01. Common Chimpanzee

Found in the tropical forests and wet savannas of Western and Central Africa the chimps learn, perform organizational thinking tasks, and have a better memory than any other Animal, having been known to defeat college grads in memory exams. They have been taught to use computers solving numerical problems and have been observed using advanced knowledge of tool. They use spears to retrieve small Animals out of holes in trees, use branches to catch and lure prey, use stones to crack nuts and leav sponges to soak up water. They've been observed using tactical attack maneuvers such as flanking prey and use mental manipulation amongst families. Chimps share 98% of the same DNA as we humans. They have been seen teaching sign language to infants totally without human intervention.

Number 4 surprises me a little. Interesting. I am reading a book right now about the sexuality of all species of animals. Much discussion is going on about chimps, homo sapiens and the bonobo. The 98% bit was not put into real context to me until the authors listed what that difference means when compared between other species. We are more alike (chimps and humans) than dog and foxes are, than white chested gibbons and red-chested gibbons are. Remarkable.

I like the guitar in your profile pic. What is that?

I am a celebration of willful chaos and a hugger.
