Another of my favorite writers died today.

He was Elmore Leonard, 87 years old, and I loved his novels before I even knew about him. When I first found out how old he was, some years ago, I actually started thinking about when he was too old to go on, or when he died, what other author was I going to find that had such a collection of good books that I could read.

These thoughts occurred because I had gone through a sort of withdrawal when Robert Ludlum (The Bourne Identity) died and I had read all of his books up to then, and I discovered that the people who tried to complete his portfolios really didn’t have the abilities that he had. Same with Sydney Sheldon!

See, I always loved Leonard's books because of the heroes, anti-heroes, villains, femme “disasters” (not a real term) and the little twists you never saw coming.

He once said something to the effect that his secret to good writing was to “…take out all the words the reader is going to skip over and leave the rest!”

It’s not an exact translation, but, you get the idea.

“Get Shorty" (John Travolta/Gene Hackman/Danny De Vito/Delroy Lindo);

“Out of Sight" (George Clooney/Jennifer Lopez/Ving Rhames/Isaiah Washington)”;

“Be Cool" (John Travolta/Uma Thurman/The Rock)”;

“Jackie Brown” (Pam Grier/Samuel L. Jackson/Robert De Niro/Robert Forster); and the current hit TV series,

"Justified” (Timothy Olyphant/Joelle Carter/Walter Goggins)” which I’ve been trying to get everyone I know interested in.

These are all movies or television creations inspired by the books of Mr. Leonard, and yes, I know nobody reads anymore (I'm still addicted) but in my mind, books are one of the greatest creations of mankind, and I'm always looking forward to the next great find.

And if you're someone who loves watching television then Justified is a show you have no business missing. Don't just take my word for it. Check it out!

I’m going to miss Elmore Leonard, author, and any new works he might have had in mind!

Thank you, Elmore Leonard.

He was a good age. I read a lot of his books & I enjoyed them a lot.

Writers like these I kinda wish would live forever; well, I guess he did. I have read a lot of his books but there are still a few I have not read as yet. But I'll get to them.
