Stopping The Snow - Cause & Effect
Stopping The Snow - Cause & Effect Once again we've had a fairly mild winter season, as winters go here on the shores of Lake Ontario. A bit colder than last year but still warmer than average. And 20 inches less snow. I got through most of February without shoveling the driveway by relying on salt and sun to keep it passable. I like the exercise I get when I shovel but only when it really needs to be shoveled. I have a 2 1/2 gallon pail with a lid that I keep by the door with rock salt in it. About three weeks ago I used the last of the salt in the bucket. I have another 50 pound bag in the closet but I figured that filling up the bucket again would only encourage more snow. I made a bet with no one in particular for no particular stakes that if I didn't fill the bucket again it wouldn't snow again enough to need salting but that if I filled it then it surely would. So far it's working! We've had a few times when I had to brush a little snow off the car window since then but nothing that accumulated on the ground. What a surprise to see everything covered with a light blanket of new snow this morning! I didn't panic and fill up the slt bucket just yet. I looked at the forecast in the newspaper and saw it said "mostly sunny" for today. By time I went out to my car the sun had already started to melt what was on my windshield. It melted all the rest by noon. I'm not re-filling that salt bucket. If I do we'll have a blizzard! I'm keeping that from happening. I'll fill it up again in November. When it's supposed to snow some before spring arrives again. I'm done with winter this year. It's not supposed to snow anymore now. It can't. Because I haven't filled my salt bucket. (BTW, I think Syracuse is going to win the western NY snowfall derby this year. They've been a couple of feet ahead of Rochester and Buffalo for most of the winter. No way we'll catch them now. Unless I fill that salt bucket... not gonna happen!) En-Joy! En-Joy! |
