Waking Up In A Surreal World... Every Day Lately

It happened again this morning.

I got up before the sun. That's just normal for me. I went down to start the coffee and the radio stuns me with yet another bizarre news story still unfolding as I'm jolted awake.

Yesterday while I measured out the coffee I listened to a volunteer firefighter describe the chaos as they arrived at the fertilizer plant in Texas. They soon realized the fire was spreading and a disaster was unfolding. They started to evacuate the nearby nursing home. Twenty minutes later all hell broke loose when the ammonia tanks exploded and leveled the neighborhood.

A pretty grim picture had been painted by time the coffee was done brewing. Not the best way to start the morning. I poured myself a cup and went up to my rec room. My spirits were lifted some by the encouraging comments I found to my HNW photo.

By the end of the day the "persons of interest" in the Boston Marathon bombing had become suspects and pictures of them were all over the news and the internet. That seems like encouraging news.

'b]"One police officer is reported killed and another wounded," the radio voice said this morning. "One suspect has been shot and may have died from his wounds while the other escaped." I wonder if I'm dreaming as I hear the surreal story of robbery, murder, a car chase and bomb throwing terrorists in the streets of Boston's suburbs. This is just too crazy to be real life, isn't it? But I'm not dreaming. It really is happening.

Makes me wonder what crazy, bizarre news I'll wake up to tomorrow. Could it possibly get an weirder? It probably could! I'm not taking any chances. I think tomorrow I'll nudge the wife a few times. "Your turn to get up and make the coffee!" I'm staying in bed until I know it's safe to get up...

I have days when I feel like closing my eyes and ears to the News as well....they come more often as I get older!

It's partly the timing of the news cycle this week - hearing all the bad news first thing in the morning. And that I grew up not far from Boston, near the coast, a few counties northward.

We had a SWAT team in our backyard once, about 20 years ago, while my niece from Texas was visiting for a few days before we left to meet up with the rest of the family on the weekend. An armed robbery suspect had holed up in a house on the street behind ours and they were surrounding it. They advised us to stay out of the back yard and we did. It didn't last long, though.

Maybe tomorrow things go back to normal and the bad news comes only after I'm already awake...

Well now that they got both the guys hopefully things will be calm for a while. But that is wishful thinking.

It was a more "normal" morning today. Big earthquake in China - but that didn't come across my news feed until I'd had my first cup of coffee at least!

I decided not to watch the "coverage" of the pursuit last night, figuring they weren't going to catch him any faster just because I was watching. Most of it was just reporters rehashing the day's events and speculating on what might be happening any way. I went to my rec room and read and commented on blogs while updates were called to me from the other room.
