wow... this is the most fascinating stuff i've read about dress codes! omg! did it really take 2+ hours to get all those layers of clothes on and off? I mean.. doesn't it go faster when you get better at it? and its hard to believe that none of those layers would cover up the breasts! how on earth did they manage that?!!!

    Quoting  :

I'm more aligned with the Native American way of thinking. A woman should be free to choose to wear whatever she is comfortable with;
In a physical sense, when it's 90'F and 90% humidity, what's wrong with being comfortable by being topless, as long as she is also psychologically/emotionally comfortable with it, too.
I also agree, there are times when some things are best kept "for private viewing only".

But, can you imagine, there were times in history when particular women of station could risk penalties, if they DID NOT expose their breasts

The breasts were exposed a number of ways; simplest was just a low wide cut top going beneath the breast. Others were laced up/foldback tops, or a clasp with a flap.
The biggest problem in these days was there were no zippers, snaps and hooks, fasteners, velcro, or buttons as we know them. A button was a wad or ball of cord (like shoe laces tied into a huge knot); the button "hole" was another cord, but with a tight loop in it. One had to push the button through the loop. Corsets had 60-120 loops on both the front AND the back, where a long leather strips would be laced through them all. But it took 2 handmaidens to do this, one to pull the strip "very" tight, while the other tucked and guided the strip through the "cord loop" eyes. And this was ONLY the corset.
Here goes : Get ready to get dressed!
Under garments - skin outward
merkin, smock/shift/chemise, stockings, corset/bodice,(sometimes 2 separate pieces), farthingale, rowle, stomacher, petticoat, kirtle, forepart, and partlet!
Outer Clothes
gown, separate sleeves (sleeves were detachable in these days),sleeve ruff, gown ruff, sometimes a cowl, cloak, shoes, veil, hat, hat dressings, jewelery.
