When I was
When I was "When I was in my mid-twenties, I was about to get married. I had met my fiancee while waiting in line for a Wynton Marsalis concert to begin. She later told me she had picked me up by offering me my place in line after I had gone off to get a drink of water. I hadn't realized that this was a pickup, but I didn't see that she was smart, beautiful, and friendly enough. And so we had coffee and then dated. It was a rocky relationship, but, well, I'm shy, you see, and I really didn't think I would ever do any better. So after two years I proposed to her. And she accepted, but we both hemmed and hawed, postponing the wedding date, until finally a job opportunity took her out of the city and we broke our engagement. I was devastated. "But the break gave me time to wrestle with my shyness. I forced myself to meet women, focusing on them not so much as sexual targets but as potential friends with whom deeper relationships might grow. And I discovered for myself a truism: Everybody is beautiful and unique. The relationships I had after my breakup showed me how special my former fiancee was, yet paradoxically that there were other people with whom I am compatible who are special in different ways. I eventually married another woman, not out of a sense of desperation but for true love and respect. The lesson: If you have any doubts about a marriage, wait. There is plenty of time, and there are plenty of people, even though when you are young, older too, sometimes, it doesn't seem that way." Willam H. |
