~~~Getting spicy in the kitchen
Stepping out of my naughty teasing style for today (well I am going to try anyways). I was chatting with a friend and of course was giving unsolicited cooking advice ( I do have lucid non sex oriented conversations sometimes). I started to think, there are several lady bloggers that include food in their posts,, [blog dbaley] and [blog LoveCalypso] , so I thought I would share a couple spices that I think I could not cook without (salt and black pepper are always a staple). The list is not all inclusive, but is influenced by my time in Thailand and Puerto Rico. Have you ever used these? Do you have a favorite spice? Looking forward to your input and comments.
OOPS already broke the non naughty promise
Cilantro, almost parsley like, but has a very unique flavor. Great when chopped and added to vegetables, meat or chicken is delicious. When used in conjunction with lime is so good.
[B]Sazon,, Many different varieties, adds a great taste. I especially like it when used to make a yellow rice.
Sofrito,, I am not sure what other cultures may use this, but I was introduced to it in Puerto Rico, is a mixture of onions, various peppers, garlic, cilantro and each house wife in Puerto Rico prides themselves on individual additional ingredients. If I do not have the ingredients, I purchase it ready made. Use it to spice up the rice,, meats, poultry etc.
Limes,,, They are good for so many things. I use them on salads, over meat, fish and poultry. It is a great substitute for salt. I actually used to have small packets of it with me when I was in the field in the military as an alternative to hot sauce to make food palatable. If I can not get them fresh, I use the bottled variety.
OK,, this is not an oops, a deliberate choice, I always enjoy help in the kitchen
I think I have tried Tumeric, but I think I will try to include it more in my cooking. I do enjoy using various peppers of the hot variety in some of my dishes. But I am sparing in their use. Thank you for your post, helped me understand turmeric a bit better
I started using cilantro recently. I like it.
I was always under the impression most greens like that (and parsley)
were just for looks and you shud shove them off the place to make room for the steak or chicken.But i learned!
~Linc was here.~
I don't like spicy food so my herb use is minimal. Baking is a different thing and I'm great with ginger, nutmeg, allspice and similar spices.
I'm personally a great kitchen 'spice'
Try to stay away from salt, much of our foods already have high sodium content. Use mainly garlic powder, onion powder, teriyaki sauce or some ginger root.
I grew up with only salt and pepper for spice for food. It is so much fun to explore the real world
Interesting post.
I've not come across any of the foods you described, except of course limes.
My favourite spices for cooking are ginger, chili flakes and cumin seeds. Cumin seeds are great to add onions before frying.
Nice to be inspired by other bloggers who love to use food and spices and other things in their blog..
I love to grow things that I can cook with. I more into hot peppers and I finally found a ghost plant that I think will be awesome this year. I have 45 hot pepper plants now in my greenhouse with other veggies.. hugs V
I cant use salt anymore. My blood pressure doesnt approve.
I use a lot of garlic and black pepper.
I stay away from dried herbs but love things like italian parsley, celery leaves, chives and such. I also can do the spicy pepper flavours.
An orgasm a day , makes you so much happier at work and play
That is a good repertoire . Makes it easier to stay away from the salt. I have to cut back a bit on the hot, hot peppers though
I use salt sparingly, if at all, and only natural sea salt. I had a reaction a couple years ago with a friend's cooking - she puts salt in everything and too much of it.
I LOVE cilantro! also thyme. Ginger, garlic, cayenne and chipotle. Also cumin. and I love the smell of cloves
