***** Why English is Such a Difficult Language

I was having a discussion with several friends . English is not their primary language, it is Spanish. We were teasing each other, since I was speaking Spanish (my grammar is horrid) and they English. It came to mind, that English is a very difficult language to learn. The grammar and usage rules , to a non native speaker can seem so arbitrary. My question to the non native English speakers, do you / did you find it difficult to learn English? And the various usages of English in various countries can be confusing Others that have learned to speak another language, have you run into problems learning that language? If you have, did it deter you? I sort of speak, English, Spanish, Thai, Laotian, Vietnamese, and Urdu. None perfect, but at least at a verbal communication level. What languages do you speak? For fun, here are some examples of the American English difficult usages. Please add any that strike you also

1.) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

but.......so many people from so many places want to come here. my position is that if you want to immigrate to such a desirable place, the commitment to learn a difficult language is a small expectation

The Spanish language has genders for some words. It does confuse me when I speak English, but is worth the effort

No question there. Through out the history of our country, there have been enclaves of immigrants with their "home" language. Fortunately over time they assimilate to one degree or another

That is one of the things that always trips me up, the gender usage for words. It is a source of a lot of teasing from my friends, I keep at it though

Although English is my first language, for many years I could not speak it intelligibly. I come from a long line of undereducated illiterates and over centuries our family's spoken language dissolved into a garbled mess... It wasn't until late primary school that my spoken or written English was equal to that of my peers. Not being able to competently speak the local language is a frightening and isolating experience. I'm so glad that I continued to apply myself to my English studies as I can now have complex conversations with the most highly educated people in the English speaking world and never feel foolish.
I applaud you for perseverance. That was the "push" when I was in different cultures, escape that isolation. Why pass up a chance to learn?

I think the English language is very hard to learn because of the relative lack of rules. i'm pleased I'm a native English speaker especially as many people's second language is English.
I can speak German (conversational not fluent) and can get by as a tourist in French and Spanish. I can also get by with American English!

I applaud you. even though English is a second language for you, it is hardly noticeable. I bet if you tried one of those language tape series, you would do very well. And I bet your vacations would be even more fun

I think it is getting more and more desirable to speak at least 2 languages. The American English must be difficult. We have so man regional "dialects" and I am afraid slang is creeping in more and more
